    130 mph in a 4.9!

I was coming from Las Vegas going to Phoenix and there is a lot of open road.
I decided to open it up from about 75. The engine was very smooth all the way to 4500 rpm and my speedo says 120 but there is an extra 10 mph after that and it went to the very last mark which is when the fuel cutoff stopped it from going any further.
It surprised me because I thought the 4.9's has a 112 cutoff.
so at 130 mph Im 25 mph shy of a Z rated N*, not too bad.
    Anyone have this experience?

N* Touring Coupes could be ordered without a limiter
4.9 ETCS were limited to 130

I think it's the Deville that is limited to 112. I haven't tried in on mine though.

Deville base Seville and base Eldo are 112
touring models came standard at 130
could be ordered with optional z tires for no limiter

    Gotcha!
so a 92 could be ordered with Z tires, or is that only N* ETC's and STS?

Base 1991 Seville is 115 mph. I would assume the same for the Eldorado since it's the same basic car as the 1991 Seville.

    Re: 130 mph in a 4.9!

so if the ETC and STS are limited to 130, does that mean the Fastchip wouldnt do any good since these cars pretty much top out at the engine's limit?
Also, could it possibly mean that the 4.9 ETC and the STS are a tad quicker to 60 than the base models?
    thanks again!

    Re: 130 mph in a 4.9!

I gotta wonder, did the speedo just *crawl* once it got past about 80? That's the way it is in my '92 deVille, it's fine until about 75-80, then it's bogs down and crawls it's way up, either until I get impatient and back off, or I'll just hold it until it hits 108 and the fuel cuts out.

    Re: 130 mph in a 4.9!

Computer chips usually just advance the timing and remove the speed limiter. You can advance the timing yourself. If you really want to go past 130 MPH then I guess the limiter could go. I have heard a couple people say that you can defeat the speed limiter with some parts from radio shack and the shop manual. I really have no idea how to go about that though. Really 130 MPH is pretty damn fast so I would not worry about it.

    Re: 130 mph in a 4.9!

past 80 it really wasnt that slow, not Porsche like fast but it seemed to get to 115 pretty effortlessly, after that it slowed down a lot, but still hit 130. If it was that slow past 80, I wouldnt have even tried to see how fast it could go for fear of running past a state trooper.
I also got to 105 without even having to floor it, I still had about 1 1/2 " of pedal left. Not that it would have made a difference in how fast it would have got to top speed but kind of cool to still have pedal left past 100.
Also with no limiter on the touring models, what is the top speed potential for these cars?

    Re: 130 mph in a 4.9!

I would just guess around 150 MPH. At 150 you run into what is called "the wall" passing it takes quite a bit of power. I would think it would run out there. Mine really is not that slow either at high speeds. I guess overall cadillac could have did a couple of other things with these engines. Really any speed it picks up well so I could not really say I am disappointed with the engine or car.

    Re: 130 mph in a 4.9!

yeah, same here. I am happy with how the car performs, even on the freeway. Like you said, 130 is plenty fast and Im happy just knowing my older luxury coupe with 168,xxx miles can still hit this speed. Will I go that fast anytime soon, probably not, but its there if I want to.
Is your 92 a touring coupe also?

The 1991 STS and I'd assume the ETC both have a 3.33 final ratio, which makes them very quick to 60 but beyond that it's a haul.

    Re: 130 mph in a 4.9!

Does anybody have a superchips or a fastchips programmed chip for there 91-92 seville/eldorado or deville with the 4.9L v8? i emailed both companies about availability, and they no longer offer them, PLUS, they wantd $200 for theirs, when they had them in stock. If ANYone out there has a performance chip and would be willing to work with me, i can duplicate them cheaply for about $50 for anyone who wants one for their car, i would just need to get ahold of an actual chip so i could copy it for use with my programmer. whomever provides me with the chip, i would make them a duplicate chip for free so that they would have a backup incase they ever had computer damage. please email me at :
