251 Belt Problems? Alternator/Fan not working.

Driving home from work tonite, I noticed the charge light came on, about 10 minutes down the road, my lights start dimming up and the car is making some funny noises. When I stop and open the hood, with the car running, my alternator and fan are not working at all, the belt doesn't look broken, it's still attached, but my resevoir is bubbling up hardcore and the engine is overheating. The car is parked on my street, no charge left in the battery, and possible cooling issues. What could be the cause of this? If the belt isn't broken why isn't my fan and alternator working? Isn't the belt that controls the alternator separate from the fan to begin with?

Assuming this is a rear wheel drive 4100 engine, the smog pump belt is probably very loose or broken. The smog pump belt wraps around the crank pulley and water pump pulleys. The alt. belt only wraps around the water pump pulley. Repair the belt issue regarding the smog pump and that should fix your problem. This is very common with 4100's that use multiple belts.

After getting a good look during the daylight, I can see the belt from the fan to the air pump is broken. I tried to replace it today, but couldn't do it. The air pump is mounted on a bracket that's entirely too difficult to get to, it's nearly impossible to get that thing to move so you can tighten the belt. Cadillac engineering is always great, but not here, the position of the air pump against the block, combined with the fact you have to get under the $#@%in' car and strain yourself half to death just to loosen the air pump to adjust it is unbelievable. Off to the garage and a 2nd missed day of work.
