My aunt has a '00 Beetle that she bought brand new and now has 60k miles on it. It sat in my grandparent's garage for about 6 years while she was living in Prague/New York/London. It has had all scheduled maintenance done at the dealer and my grandpa drove it at least 10 miles once a week while she was away. As of now there are stains in the headliner from where the roof was leaking, the driver's window switch is broken (already been fixed twice before) and there is a horrible parasitic battery drain that we have linked to the heated seats. VW = not worth the investment.

Definitely not going down that path, not even with a brand new one.
Oh I suppose you're wondering what the diagnosis was with the Mercedes. The Blower motor is shot.....$1170 for a replacement...not covered under my warranty The A/C warning light was on because all the refrigerant leaked out of the compressor and to replace that it would cost $1700, but THANK GOD that's covered under my warranty. The A/C drier is leaking too, but that's not covered, but at only $200, it's not horrible.
