Hello All: I know this is an old topic, but I haven't found any easy to read documentation on how to get at the coil to change the plug wires on my 97. I have a skip in the engine at warmed up idle. I was told that the ones on there now look like the originals. 178K. I took the plugs out and they were GM originals (?) and a real mess. I put in a set of iridium ones and believe I screwed up a wire becuase now I get that miss. I bought a new set of Bosch wires and would like to learn the secret of getting at that coil. I hooked up my code reader and there were no codes recorded. Can anyone help? Regards.

I ordered these as dimpled and slotted. When i was touring the Target Ganassi race team facility i got an answer on the whole drilled and dimpled and slotted and all that for rotors. I was talking with their engineer and he explained the different types of rotors used for different types of courses. For oval courses they use a solid carbon rotor. the only time they really brake is when pitting. For road courses with quick turns and a lit of braking they use a rotor with a sort of sideways v (>) to get grab on braking. They also use a drilled and slotted for a "hybrid track" they will use drilled/slotted rotors to better dissipate heat and brake dust. It was something like that. The drilled is more prone to cracking so i went with dimpled and slotted. the slotted is supposed to be a lot better to dissipate rain. 04 GTO calipers soon to come.

Hello,

I am new to the forums and after looking around a bit I believe thie is the place to get a few questions answered for my 1997 Catera.

1. Where is the best place to get a "good" pair of replacement headlights. I would like to maybe go to a projection set or HID or if available a halo set like the bmw's?

2. Where is the best place to get a replacement rear LED brake light bar?

3. My blower motor for my AC/HEAT will not shut off unless I pull the the fuse (even with turning off the ignition) nor will it change speeds. Any ideas or diagrams the might lead me to the problem?

4. I saw a photo on the forums of a woven grill, is that available for the 97'???

Thank you for any answers you might have....I hope I get a chance to contribute back.
I hope that I'm not stepping out of bounds here on the parts offering. Anybody looking to repair their leaky engine oil cooler and adapter with geniune GM parts? I had plans to repair mine but sold my 2001 Catera Sport before tackling the job. I have the parts on sale in Craigslist Chicago for $300 which includes the adapter kit. If anyone is interested on the forum, I'll sell for everything for $275.
Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks to all the great posts that have helped me through my 8 years of catera ownership.
My car stalled while my girlfriend was driving it. So I went to pick it up the next day with a tow dolly and it started right up. I then towed it home anyways and it started right up again and I let it run for 20 minutes or so. Thinking I had dodged a bullet I shut it off and went about my business.
A week later I tried to start it up and the battery was dead. I hooked the battery charger to it and it started for about 3 seconds then quit. It will not start now only crank over and over. I am embarrsed to say that I attempted to check for spark with starting fluid but it did not start with that either. After reading posts on here I bought and installed a new Crankshaft position sensor and it still will not start. Within the last 6 months I have installed new wires, plugs and coil. I do however have a cam cover leak.
Can anyone help with my problem. I would like to fix my car to use as a secondary driver but at this point I am ready to put it on ebay at no reserve.
Thanks

Lets get one thing out of the way, i bought my first catera
in 2004 and it was a 98. had some problems with it but overall
i love catera's. but dec of 2008 the engine started knockin and
ended up blowin a piston through the pan. me and my friends were
jokin around about puttin an old school gen I 350 carb in there.
so we went fabbin and welded in solid mounts and now i have
a 1998 catera th350 trans 350cid with 600 holley. ran 9.81 in 1/8.
1/8 is all we got close to me...... i also bought a 1997 catera for
250 bux with popped timing belt, put my old heads on and its a
cheap beater. and yes i will get pics up soon of the swap i know
some of you would really like to see some details on this.

Ok since today I got started on tearing this car apart and messing with it. I'll keep all my updates in here. So far the list of add on's is:

* Pioneer Z110BT
* Real cf dash kit (began tonight, debating color at this point)
* White led conversion for all interior lights (close to the newer caddy lights)
* 2 more lighter plugs
* AC Inverter
* 35% tint
* remote start/alarm
* Full custom cf/ fiberglass trunk setup with plexi and led's
* Real 150db train horn setup (included in trunk)
* Maybe a cf engine cover if i get bored enough

Next year I'll focus on the outer body and suspension/wheels since Chicago winters are brutal enough.

Ill take some pics tomorrow morning when i lay the cf and pick my color or wrap

I do however have a few question. I've been researching and there are a few projects that are gonna happen right off the bat.

1. Lowering - What kits do each of you have? I found eibach springs so far and its a subtle drop but i always wanna see what else is out there.

2. Lip kits - I saw a few kits for the opel (obviously not under the caddy name). Anybody have first hand experience with the fit n finish?

3. Wheels - What is our bolt pattern?

I've got a group of plans for it already since i just picked it up yesterday. Today the pioneer z110bt is goin in, windows getting tinted, and maybe the system going in depending on how creative i wanna get with the trunk. (I build custom cars for a living)

First, the reason I did this is because its a pain to get to it and second, also spending hours to replace it at least every two years. I decided to relocate it for easy access if it goes bad again. I have also attached the links so you can see, let me know what you think. Your opinions are appreciated.

About a week ago as I was starting my 2000 Catera and as I turned the key the passenger side window started rolling down on its own. I hit the switch to stop it and it did nothing. After a few seconds I was able to roll it up (express up did not work). Once it was up, I could not roll it back down again.

I chalked it off to a bad window switch and have just been driving it. Earlier today, I started the car again and the window rolled down on its own again. Could not roll it up. About an hour later, I went to leave and the window mysteriously rolled itself up (as I started the car). Again the switches do nothing, it does what it does and I can't operate it myself.

I also noticed that my car is locking itself now (intermittently). For example, when I open the door to get out of the car they may lock, or when I shut the door they may lock. One time I put the key in, unlocked it, and then it immediately re-locked. Keyless operation still works, and they still lock and unlock when shifting in and out of park.

To sum it up, this sounds to me like a flaky BCM. Are they a common problem in Cateras? Or has anyone else had any similar issues?

I just purchased a 1997 Catera with the Bose system and I love this car but the only issue is that it only has a AM/FM Cassette player. I have a new Kenwood KDC MP738U stereo that I had purchased right before I totaled my last car. I want to put this stereo in the Catera now so I can listen to CDs and my iPod.

My questions are what am I going to need for the install? Just the dash kit and the GMOS-06? Also the back of the Kenwood only has 2 RCA jacks, will that be an issue because the GMOS-06 seems to have 4 RCA plugs?

Any help ASAP would be great! I'd love to ordered the equipment I need and get to work right away! Thank you!

I finally took my car in today for a much needed alignment since I had recnetly replaced my control arms. The alignment specialist informed me that he could not adjust the camber as there is no adjustment on the struts. He said that aftermarket struts would probably have them. Is camber that important? Also does this mean that the struts on my car are original? The previous owner assured me that he replaced them. Thanks!

Codes are 500 (speed sensor), 2108 (lost communication with ABS Module), and 1700 (TC module). How could this all happen at the very same time? There must be a single root cause.

My car is a 2000 Catera with 80,000 miles, btw.

2001 non-sport, 166,000 miles
- P0411 code several times a week
- Rough idle when started cold
- No issues once the engine was warm

Solution
- Replaced MAF sensor

One trigger for the P0411 code is failure to detect a lean condition during a cold start as it should with the extra air introduced by the secondary air injection system. During a cold start the MAF sensor must have been mis-guiding the computer causing an unexpected fuel-air ratio as measured by the O2 sensors. Once the car warmed up and closed-loop control was established the car ran fine.

Just picked up a 99 Catera 2 days ago and would like to change the plugs since the PO had no idea when they were last changed. Subscribed to ALLDATADIY since I could not find a repair manual locally. ALLDATA says tool J43301 is required to remove the coil pack. Any suggestions on a source for this tool and is there an alternative way to remove? When I belonged to an other make forum, they had a loaner agreement where as you could borrow a specialty tool from another member, just pay shipping both ways. Anything like that here? It saved a lot of unnecessary expense since most specialty tools we very seldom used. Thanks...Bill

Of course, being a man, I said "WTF are you talking about?" and then start trying to test them out. Sure enough my turn signals aren't working. Getting back home I find the hazards won't work either. Check the fuses they look ok. So I run down and grab a flasher relay and pop it in and still nothing.
Any thoughts?

i googled and the only thing that came back was teh last one, and it's a relay for vw/audi, which makes sense. that said, i cannot locate the equivalent gm part number.

ideally, id like to replace this with a solid-state load-independent relay...in which case i still need teh OEM part#. i also tried to match based on the pin configuration, but none i can find have the same # combination next to the pins.
i'd appreciate any help!
also, here's the pin configuration:

Hey all, I'm new here to the forums. Great info on these boards. However, I have a few questions for those that know this car.

First off, I'm an old mechanic, and former crew member to a NHRA Pro Stock team. But I haven't really turned wrenches in the last 10 years, other than typical maintenance on my GMC Jimmy, and wifes Pontiac Montana. I do still have a well stocked toolbox. That just a little run down so you know I'm at least a little mechanically inclined.

Last year, my wife and I lost our business, so I started working part time for Penske, at a used car dealership. I saw a '98 Catera on the lot, and wanted to test drive it, to replace my gas guzzling Jimmy. I fell in love with the car, but not for $6K. So about 8 months ago, or so, the dealership got a 2000 black Catera, from the auction, and said nothing worked in it, no power, engine wouldn't turn over, ect. ect. They towed it in on a Penske trailer, and when they pushed it off the trailer, they ripped the lower part of the bunmper wth the fog lights.

So a few months ago, the car is still sitting there, so I went and asked my boss and asked if I could buy the car as is from him. He said I could have it for $600 bucks. So I'm about to pay for the car now. But the mechanic told me to go play with it, before buying it. So the car is mine, I just haven't paid for it yet.

So the other night, after hours, and the boss and mechanic not in sight, I put an jumper pack on the car, wiggled the main power line, and bam, the radio came on, all the lights lit up. I turned the key, and it started up.

The car seems to be very well loaded, with a sun roof, bose cd/cassett, tan interior, no body damage other than the front bumper, all the same mag wheels on it. Very nice looking car, if it got a little TLC.

When I really looked under the hood, it has stains around the over-flow bottle, where the radiator cap is. The engine ticks, like a lifter. But the oil is dark, not milkey.

So here is my questions:

1. Do you guys think the engine might be okay, it idles fine, other than that ticking? I'll do a pressure test on the coolant system, but like I said, with the stains on the right side of the car, it looks like it might have overheated and maybe somebody opened the cap?

2. I'm finding it hard to find the front bumper, in black if I can for it. Where would be the best place to find a bumper for it?

3. What kind of gas mileage can I expect from this car on the highway? I live in Florida, so its all flat driving at 70mph or so.

4. I see on Ebay they have cross drilled rotors with pads, is it worth it, or save up for GTO brakes? Any modifications to put them on?

5. The weather stripping around the front windshield is dry rotted bad, where can I get a new one, without having to sell my GMC to pay for it? ;-)

Thanks all.

Joe

This is a good price, I have been on a look out for the last 2 years and this is the first pair that I have seen that cheap. Most run in the 900-1000$.
May need a bit of sanding and repainting if the curb rash is buggin you too much.

These will make for a good set on someone's Catera...
Here is how they look on mine with 245/40R18.

I'm looking to get a good picture or few of the back side of the engine, fully assembled, but out of the car.
I have a couple loose hoses back there and its really hard to see what the heck is going on with the engine in the car. I noticed there are a few probably PCV hoses laying limp dangling down the backside of the engine. I was changing my oil when I looked up and saw one of them laying on the exhaust downpipe getting charred.
I also have oil all over the back/underside of the engine and it reeks like burning oil after driving a while and getting out. I think this hose(s) may have a small role in that and my occasionally erratic idle. I think the real oil problem is the rear main seal which I'm not going to touch.
So, anyone have good pictures of what this boat anchor looks like out of the car?

Hey guys,

One of my ignition coil boot (cylinder 1) is swollen due to oil contamination when my valve cover gasket began leaking; filling the spark plug well with oil.

I'm in need of a new boot for this cylinder. This one still fits, but unfortunately does not seal as good and moisture is building up in the well.

Any of you guys have one of these "spark plug boot" that I can purchase? Some of you may have changed your ignition coil and may have the boot intact lying around somewhere collecting dust.

I don't really feel like forking out $100+ for a new ignition coil.

By the way, my car is a 2001.

If you have one, please email me at: frmg0014@gmail.com along with your asking price.

Thanks guys!

Hi every one. Well I got my first catera, for free! Because it doesnt run/kinda. Well as said in the tittle its throwing that CEL. And I have no idea what it means. Also the car has a hard time starting(replaced crank angle sensor). Didnt work, if I sit there and crank it for about 20sec it always starts. Also there is white smoke coming from the exhaust, when you first start the car it smokes really bad. When the car is warm it hardly smokes at all. Smoke comeing from pass side head, right belowe the fuel lines. Any one have any ideas or links? Thank you -Shelby-

It didn't even last two weeks.....

$2318.change and I'm out the engine completely. It spun a rod bearing AFTER I got it back from the dealership. Is it really worth sinking another 2K into an engine and installation for it?

With having the transmission replaced less than 15K ago and it's already going out again, I'm looking at about $1200 to replace the trans AGAIN with a used (>20K miles) trans. So sinking roughly $5700 into it, for what just to own a Cadillac? Not worth it IMO. I just bought a 1992 Camery for $500, dumped $300 in struts and CV shafts into it and whaddaya know, I have a smooth riding car that will last me another 150K miles.

I might be parting it out if I can't get anywhere with the Cat. :dammit: :rant2:

Heres an old time way to test your MAF,: Sometimes the MAF gets weak and may still be working but not working right. What you have to do is to increase the air velocity flowing over the sensor. you do this by taping up the end of the air tube. so that there is only a small hole for the air to run through. make a small hole about 1/4" in diameter, make it as close as you can to the sensor, I taped up the end that has the screen on it, and made a small hole right in the center.then start up the car and see if it idles ok.If it does then the MAF is malfuctioning . if nothing changes then its ok. Try it out, its quick and easy and inexpensive..
