Hey guys, ive got a 98 sts with 136k on it. Ive replaced the CKP's, plugs, wires, ful filter, etc. Trying to get as much done on it as possible. Ever since the day ive owned the car its had a rough idle issue. I replaced everything trying to track it down and she still idles rough. This is the least of my worries as of right now. Ive noticed latelly that when its cold it misses horribly. Once it gets some heat in it, she runs fine. So tonight I swapped out the coil packs and the ICM. Hoping that helps. Also ive noticed a few wierd electrical things latelly. The doors dont unlock most of the time when you put it in park. Then apon restarting the car they lock, unlock and lock again quickly. Also the radio holds stations for a little while, then all of the sudden will just reset???? I also noticed that my horn beep when locking the car is very weak now, but the voltage says OK. Its right at 14 volts. Any suggestions?

Hey there,

Im not sure what to do about my recent automatic transmission issue.

My problem is with the overdrive in my 1995 ETC. When driving normal it doesn't want to stay in overdrive and kicks into third I think. Then sometimes when I am coasting through town and down hills, it will finally slide into overdrive and the instant mpg's are great. The other gears are working fine but shifting a tad harder than normal. It is really affecting my gas mileage, currently getting an average of 11-12 mpg.

I am not sure if it is a problem with the transmission solenoids, or if the tranny is just going out due to having 160,000 miles on it. I went to the local Cadillac dealership and the guy I talked to just had dollar signs in his eyes and didn't tell me anything helpful.

I added some Lucas Transmission fix but didn't seem to have any effect. I also checked my codes, and no problems there. Im not affraid to get greasy and fix it, but at the same time don't want to get in over my head.:confused:

I am a starving college kid :) and would like to fix this as cheap as possible! So hopefully you guys have some ideas. Thanks for the help!

Well I took the SLS for a 40mi drive today and when retuning home I decided to do a couple WOT runs. For the WOT i put the car in second gear and after my last one I put the car back in Drive. Everything was fine and dandy and when I returned I decided to check to see if there were any codes. Turns out I have 3 P codes that I believe were not there when I left for my ride.

Current P1189 - Engine Oil Pressure (EOP) Switch Circuit
Current P1860 - TCC PWM Solenoid Circuit Electrical
Current P0741 - TCC System Stuck Off

I figure the Oil pressure circuit code is from the sensor being unplugged or shorting. I know it is on the oil filter adapter, but have never seen it. To check that do I just unscrew the oil filter and there it is, or is there more to it?

And for the TCC stuff, is it possible the torque converter is stuck? If so is there any thing to try short of paying 2000? Or is this just a thing that may go a way after a few drives?
Thanks.

On our return trip from Branson last week, the Service Engine Soon light on our 2003 STS came on. This happened on my 98 SLS, and I found the fuel cap to be the guilty party. So, given the cap was original, I replaced it. The light went out, so I thought I had, for a $24 cap, corrected the problem.

Also, on this return trip, I had a serious hesitation while passing another car. So much so, I was concerned something else was going on. In any case, I avoided WOT passing attempts out of fear.

Unfortunately it came on again shortly thereafter so there is sxomething else going on. The other night, I cleared all the codes and the light went out until this morning on my way to the office. It went out again during my trip to lunch, so tonight, I decided to pull the codes. The "B" codes pertain to the driver's window position sensor, so I am not too worried aboput them; however, the P0101 & U1016 do give me some concern. The car has 96,000 miles and has an excellent service record.

Any suggestions before I head the the dealer for a fix?

I'm looking at tow STS's. One is a a 99 with 48,000 mi on it. A Cadillac mechanic bought it from an old lady who wasn't willing to spend the money on repairing the blown head gasket. He just finished making the repair and also replaced all gaskets and seals in the lower unit. According to the mechanic who is selling it states every seal and gasket on the engine was replaced. It's pretty much a cream puff as they say. Because of the condition, recent mechanical work and the mileage, it's pretty much the same price as the 2003 I'm looking at.

The other is a 2003 with 80,000 miles. It's also in immaculate condition. Again both cars can be bought for in and around the same price.

Any thoughts as to pros and cons as to either car. At this point I could be happy with either. I just don't have the mechanical and trim insight regarding these model years that might help me make a decision. I put about 10,000 miles on a car a year and would plan on keeping it for 10 years. Any insight or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

My first mechanic did a test if the head gasket was leaking and said that it was not. Well… the car over heated last week so I brought it to a new mechanic who put dye in the coolant and oil and pressure tested the engine. He came back and said that there is nothing wrong with the car and he has no explanation.
Why would this car overheat when I drive more then 20 miles if no one can find anything wrong with it… any ideas?

Hi all,

First I would like to start by saying i'm from Canada. I'm not sure if the models have any differences or not. I'm looking for a change and i've always liked the STS model. I'm looking for something in my price range and basically what i'm looking at right now are the 2000-2003 Cadillac STS models. Most cars have from 150-180KM (93K Miles-111K Miles).

I would like to verify a few things with you guys before going through with my search.

Do these cars have reliability issues? Do they have reliability issues after a certain mileage amount? Are these cars money pits (break down a lot). Am I looking for trouble buying one that has over 150,000KM? Any typical expensive problems from 2000-2003 for the STS models? I read these have head gasket issues but not so much after 2000?

I have owned many cars (mostly imports) and I never had any troubles diagnosing and repairing them. Will I have any issues on the Cadillacs? Are they very difficult to work on without a hoist? Do Cadillacs require certain advanced expensive devices and testers to diagnose trouble codes, engine lights, abs alarms? What type of ECU do they run?

How expensive are the repairs and maintenance on these cars? Do the 300hp v8 northstar engines take 91 octane minimum or can they run off 87? How many litres are the tanks on these cars? How many km per tank on average do these cars guzzle?

Any other advise, recommendations or even the main differences from the 2000 to 2003 models would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks a lot!

Headgasket Repair in Atlanta area?

After reading many posts here on headgasket symptoms, I'm 90% to 98% sure this is what is required on my 97 Eldorado. She's got many miles, and after reading posts, I'm lucky I got her up to 235k miles (I bought her used at 56k miles). I've already replaced water pump (twice), radiator, upper hose, reseve tank, thermostat, heater core, and inlet heater core hose.

My question here is, does anyone know of any non dealership mechanic or garage in the Atlanta area that has done these successfully?

Thanks to all for your guidance in the past. I hope someone here can pull one more rabbit out of their hat!

I have been having a problem with my 99 STS lately. The instrument panel has been cutting in and out lately (completly black). I checked the voltage and it is around 14.0 volts when driving. I ran the codes and got ABS 1056 and PCM 1189 (current), cleared the codes and when I drove I had the same problem and never got any codes that time. The TC light also came on once for a split second and the unlock button on fob and door wouldn't work for a couple minutes once. Any ideas?

I ran across this site the other day and found a neat little tool that converts your VIN number to the RPO codes for that VIN. It also tells you how many other cars that year had that option and how many other cars are exactly like yours. Haven't had the time to play with it much but thought it may be of use or amusement to someone.

After you run your VIN at the bottom of the page... it takes a while to load... are all kinds of GM charts that give specific info about your car.

My 98 Eldorado ETC has started doing something crazy. All the lights on the dash blink and error message reads, " Theft System Error, Car May not Restart, Service Airbag" Car starts then immediatly cuts off. The battery is also being drained to where it eventually has no power after sitting awhiler(overnight or so) .

I believe this is all linked to a leak that has happened with this Noreaster in my sunroof and rear windshield. My back floors were soaked from the leak and my overhead was damp. I believe something electricals getting wet and is causing all the problems. This has happened once before, and after about a week or so it mysteriously went away. As though maybe something got wet then too, then dried possibly.
Please help me, is there any ground wire, maybe under the carpet or something, or any thing that could be getting wet from this and causing this?

First I'd like to thank you for taking the time to respond to my question. I am the proud owner of a 1997 Cadillac Eldorado Touring and have been trying to find out how many were produced in 1997. So far, the only figure I have come across is that there were 18,102 total base (esc) and touring (etc) eldorados produced in 1997. If anyone out there knows of a production number of just the touring model from 1997 it would be much appreciatated.

I need help! Just replaced the blower motor and still no air. The job was not an easy install either--hard to get at and plastic cover around these parts--so brittle. I also checked the connectors to the motor--look fine. I understand the module is built into the motor. Not sure what else to check--figures I have these issues going into winter. I hate to have to go to the stealership. Any advise would be great! I have owned the car for about 6 months--luv it! And must say this board has been fantastic!

Also, the plastic covers around the the blower and tan filters--does this need to be replaced? As I mentioned, it is half fallen off and whats left is too brittle to touch--looks like crap! But cannot find a replacement housing? Is it OK to leave uncovered?

I need to add R-134a to my A/C, but I'm not sure which valve is the low pressure valve. I see the two valves near the compressor. They both have black covers, and one is larger than the other. They also look like they are both on the same metal tube. I tried attaching the dispenser hose to the larger valve, but it won't fit; the valve is too big. I don't want to try to put it on the smaller valve, since it could quite possibly be the high pressure valve. Any clarification would be appreciated.

Here is a picture of the valves that I see.

So, it only took 4 weeks of ownership before the Service Engine Soon lamp clicked on :-(

Pulled the codes, have TCC System Stuck Off. I cleared it, did 100 miles of driving today, didn't come back yet.

The thing is, I'm almost 100% sure the TCC is engaging. I see the 300 rpm drop after it shifts into 3rd, before hitting OD when I am only accelerating to 55 mph. And, my RPM at 75 mph is just a hair under 2k rpm, which it has always been. The revs don't swing wildly under cruising conditions, it acts just like it is locked up. Is it possible the TCC is intermittently not engaging?

If it is intermittent, is there any thing I should try before having the trans pulled? At 59k miles, maybe time for a fluid change? I don't know what service was ever done in the past.

Hello, My Eldorado with 73,400 Miles on it has given me the dreaded "Service Ride Control" alert. I asked my mechanic to check and see if it was one of the bags or the compressor (I highly doubted it was the compressor, as the car was still leveling just fine). As i had suspected, one of the rear air ride bags has a small leak in it. Does anyone know if there is a strut-spring conversion for this car? If so does anyone know the approximate cost? Will the ride quality change? better, worse? In which way? -Thanks, Matt

It's time we spoke with Cadillac about PCM tuning.

They keep deleting my posts on their facebook page that links back to the post I made in the Northstar section.

Who's with me on getting their help with re-tuning the Northstar PCMs to allow us to have a bit more fun with these cars?

If enough of us sign a petition (if you will) they will have to hear us out. Even if they don't help us let's at least get their attention.

It's in Cadillac's best interest to work with it's owners. We are in one way or another, the reason Cadillac is in business.

http://www.cadillacforums.com/forums...e-help-us.html

Please people, let's get everyone to post who's interested in torque management defeat and to eliminate 1st gear lockout, and soforth. Let's get their help to end the quest for re-tuning, once and for all. If anyone can do it, Cadillac can.

The dealer installed a new one about 4 years ago, sure didn't think I would be tearing it back apart yet, but coolant was leaking around the o-ring.There is some red colored sticky residue on the dealer installed o-ring. So that brings me to my question: should the o-ring have sealant applied to it and if so, what is the best thing to use.

Hi all.
Water pump failed, so I had replaced. Drove 45 minutes then it started to rune like crap. Mileage is terrible. No balls, wants to die. I replaced the O2 sensor, but that did nothing.
I pulled the codes to get EO13 and EO52.
A buddy told me it might be the headgasket, but no white smoke. If it were the headgasket or a warped head from overheating, would it not have started running poorly from the get-go after the waterpump replacement? It didn't start running poorly until I had run it a while (nearly an hour). I pulled the plugs, and two of them are cleaner than the others, but I'm not sure this may be normal and I never noticed as I never pulled the plugs before.
Perhaps it could be the brainbox?

Any advice will certainly be appreciated.

I am wanting to confirm PCM/Prom ID's #'s for 92 Seville 4.9l. I'd appreciate someone who has a 92 Seville to check the prom ID #. For someone who might not know how to find the number go to ECM Data and click on ED99. I'm suspecting a problem with my PCM, since it has a 94' 4.9l want to make sure I've got the right match. I'm hoping of course to buy it from the local parts store rather than the dealer. Is the prom available from anyone besides the dealer. The info from the dealer is that the prom is year specific for the Seville. I also understand that the same PCM was used in the Eldorado and the Deville. Thanks for any info you may have.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

The nut connecting my linkage to my motor "fell off" a month ago and I put a new one on. I put it on very tight, because i didn't want it to fall off too!

Thank you in advance for any insight!!

I had read this on here before and thought it was a stretch..but I just proved it to myself. I had replaced my rear bulbs with LED replacement bulbs. Same type I used in the vette with no issues...3 years and counting. Didn't have any issues or codes with the SLS either....but as days turned into weeks I noticed that more times than not, my trac/ABS lights would trip and lock out first gear. And sometimes, no lights at all....just no first gear and no trac off button operation. I replaced the bulbs with new and nothing for 3 weeks. This leads me to believe it would also happen with a blown bulb. Although they both require the same voltage, the draws are completely different. Just my .02

I have read elsewhere that part # 19120501 is a replacement part number and requires an adapter harness. I prefer the original part, used but in good working condition. I have been quoted $400-$700 for a new ballast at dealer. Anyone got an 01 STS parts car with HID lights they can part out?:bomb:

The automatic antenna on my Seville as of today has stopped going down when I turn off the radio. I can hear the motor of the antenna running but it doesn't go down. I'm guessing the rope/cord inside the antenna mast has snapped or become disconnected. Also, I cannot push the antenna down when the radio is off, it feels like the cord is still in there holding it up, which leads me to thinking that it broke off where it connects to the motor and not where it connects to the antenna. Is there any way to take it apart and fix it? I have two antenna units in storage but I'd rather fix this one if possible.

EDIT: I found a post by Ranger that sounds pretty good, I'll give it a shot this weekend, but if you have a recommendation please do post. Much thanks
my 89 eldo (97K) is draining my battery ...I changed it last week for a new one and used the car once and left it for a week and the battery is drained completely dead again, car is charging properly 13.5 + volts
I made sure none of the lights are on and the trunk light is not on...any ideas on where I can look for the source of the drain?
I have had no electrical problems with the car in the past and everything is meticulously maintained.
sometimes when I start the car it will click and I will probably have to replace the starter in the future but could the solenoid drain the battery?
thanks

The miles on the other are unknown but are off the same car as mine (97 STS). The other ones are off a 1999 DeVille with 60,000 on it. Scrapper says they are the same as mine, but i am iffy. I hear my control arms are rare and i know they are very expensive at the dealer (800 a side up here in Canada). I would like to try the ones from the DeVille but he cant get a picture of them for me. Im wondering how many 1999 Deville owners are here, and if any of you can tell me your control arms look like the ones i have attached in the image :) Ignore the red circle, i stole the picture from someone else. Actualy, that red circle shows the part that is the reason i am changing mine..... VERY noisy over bumps. Sounds like im dragging a box under the car.

Ok guys...I'm currently deployed to the Middle East and my wife is driving my car. Before I left, I thought I had fixed the problem, but I guess not.

Every once and awhile, the cruise control cable pops out of the grommet, and there isn't enough tension on the cable, thus, the cruise control obviously won't engage.

I need a picture of the engine, with enough detail for a 40 year old woman to be able to fix this problem. She won't need any tools, just to pop the cable back into position. But it is difficult to describe where the cable is.

If you could also edit and point out major systems on the picture for her to be able to tell what is what.

2001 Eldorado.

Thanks guys! :-)

Guys----

Here is the deal, I am completely new to this forum. I just today bought the 94 SLS that I have posted some questions about. Went out on ebay and got a set of the GM service manuals.

Now I need help. The race is the 24 hours of lemons. I need to fix the motor, change the brakes, remove airbags and I hope I am good.

Now I will ask a thousand questions, but I promise all of your advice will go into building one really cool race car.

I will even post pictures as we progress.

So tonights question is, I can't have airbags in the car. What is the best way to remove them, short of watching fight club and hitting the bumpers (which I know won't work, I smashed my brothers head into bumpers a 1000 times and no airbags).

I figure after I get rid of the driver airbag, I should remove and replace the steering wheel. Does anyone know how to do that, and does it cause any electrical problems?

About 10 minutes into the drive to work this morning in my 98' STS my DIC, Turn Signals, Cruise, Speedometer and Tach all died at the same time. After parking the Car for a while eveything works just fine again then about 10 minutes into another drive it all dies again. I just purchased this car 3 months ago spent $800 on the cooling system, $650 in tires. It came with no radio so I spent another $150 on a Bose head unit and about 5 hours soldering wires and reconnecting the sound system from the amp, sounds great now though, but now I have this problem. My wife made the comment the other day "With all the money and time you have invested in this project, You could of just had an affair and it would of been cheaper", I then replied: "I love my STS and want to keep her cause she's Mine...:D All Mine!!"
So I need your help with this problem. Thanks in advance for your input.

I've been chasing this problem since buying a 92 Seville with 4.9l...when turning vehicle off the ISC plunger will not retract and "rachets" for a few seconds before shutting down... now there's a new Tps and new ISC, circuitry checks good from the TPS to the PCM, and from the PCM to the ISC. When chking for voltages every thing chks good according to the parameters... except for the voltage from the PCM to terminal D (Lt. blue wire) of the ISC is reading 9+ volts instead of the 5v or less. In time the ISC motor "burns up", I'm now on the 3rd one. I am of the opinion now that the PCM has the problem...and most likely needs replaced. Has anyone had a similar problem and what was the fix? Until today I've been throwing parts at it like they were rocks...so I'd like a bit more certainty before replacing the PCM. Any thoughts or solutions is appreciated. Thanks

I promised her a Red Cadillac, I just didn't tell her it would be 17 years old.

I would first like say thanks to everyone for the WEALTH of information on contained within these forums...it really makes being a lifetime cadillac owner worth it, and saves a single father of two lots of money!!

With that said I have a troubling, stressfull problem.... On Sunday (11/08/09) I made the decision to save myself some of those afformentioned dollars by replacing my plenum boot. Thanks to the users in this forum who share the info they obtain thru the trial and error processes of car maintainance, this was a relatively smooth process. I unplugged the battery (safety precautions) and proceeded to work and was In and out within 1.5 hrs....Naturally I was feeling good, and satisfied being it was my first major piece of work I had done on my car aside from fixing a flat.

Long story short, wrapped everthing up put the tools back in place and was ready to get my car back on the road. When I went to stat the car, the ignition switch would not turn at all:ill:
I tried everything. For two hours I was turning the wheel back and forth, jarring the stick, shaking the car, even jacked it up while jostiling the ke in the ignition....there was nothing that worked:banghead:

So basically I decided that my ignintion switch had given out, as I have had problems trying to turn the key before, and decided that replacing it would be my best option....Again the users and moderators here with thier wealth of knoweledge and expertise have come in extremely helpfull as I was able to access the steps to remove and replace the faulty lock and tumbler mech.

BUT HERE IS MY PROBLEM:
Per the instructions provided in the switch needs to be turned to the ON position in order for the park lock cable to be removed....I cant turn the key at all....so I am stuck in a rut!! Is there a solution, can someone please help...I have been at this for two days and I am desperate for a remedy!!!

Thanks in advance,
Josh

BTW....Went to the dealer and had them cut a new key....I think this genius cut it from the same my key which he admitted was well worn down instead of using a master....Needless to say neither work in the ignition or the trunk lock, just the door.

I have read somewhere that it should be found at the spare tire cover, but I cant find it there. I also can`t believe that Cadillac have put the RPO sticker on a thin blanket, made of cloth, for spare tire cover. Does anyone know where I can find the sticker on a Eldorado -78?

Aight, so I am thinking, over the next couple of years, of adding upgrades to my 94 eldo. Listed below are the things I want to change. What I would like is reviews on what products would work best.

-Exhaust System or just the exhaust
-Rims
-Air Intake

What I am going for is a clean, nice sounding car. I want to stick with Cadillac Rims, but want updated chrome ones. What year or kind would look good? Also, what are good air intake and exhaust products that would have the same quality standards as the Cadillac itself? If you want to see what the car looks like now, just search 1994 Eldorado, and it will be under my username, pthorne24. Thanks for all the help!!

Well it was a very agitated week for me because this car was for sale on e-bay. I could close an eye thinking about it. Today I came home earlier than usually dreaming that I might be able to own this car. In the end I was one of the highest bidders on it (I believe the second or third) but unfortunately the reserve did not met. I had a message exchange with the owner and although I would not disclose the price is willing to accept, I must admit it makes all the sense in the world. The car is truly a piece of American history, is number 1595 or 1596. This was the chance of a lifetime, I should remember this day as the day I could own the last Eldorado ever sold to the public (the very last one is owned by GM). If I dig deep into my pockets I would be able to own it but there are other considerations in life unfortunately.
The car has 4072 miles and looks like it just came out from the factory floor the other day.

Well, I bought this 2000 STS three years ago, with 91,250 miles. Now at 140,400 miles, I have conclusive proof that the headgaskets are failing. Most everything else in the cooling system has been replaced in the last 2 years:

Radiator (cracked side tanks)
Water pump (Leaking through shaft and seal)
Coolant crossover gaskets
Thermostat (got stuck open)
Radiator cap (plastic piece broke, wouldn't hold pressure. This was installed last month.)
Main radiator hoses (This was a precaution. Old ones looked fine).

And now I'm getting coolant bring forced past the radiator cap. The final piece of evidence: I take the radiator cap off after an overnight cool down, put my nose to the radiator cap, take a deep breath, and smell coolant... and engine exhaust.

Spoke to Jake at Northstar Performance, and he agreed: It's the headgaskets.

Here's the twist: My 4T80E transmission is flaking out too! 2 problems for the price of 1! :bighead: Symptoms there are:

Fluid has gone from bright red (complete fluid change at 102,000 miles, not a flush. Did it the old fashioned way, and to get the rest of the old fluid out detached a trans cooler line and pumped out the old fluid while adding new until new fluid came out) to red/brown in 39,000 miles.
Increasingly hesitant to engage torque converter lockup, takes longer to engage than usual.
Twice in one week, missed the 1st to 2nd shift at WOT (normal shift at 6400, engine bounced off the rev limiter at 6500-6600 2-3 times before shift was completed, with an abrupt bang. No more WOT shifts until this is fixed.

I discovered this today while poking around underneath... What is it called? The FSM labels it as "Insulator', 'retainer', and 'nut". The other end of the bar is welded to the control arm as one piece.

How does this affect how the car handles and what happens if I leave it like this?:hmm:

New member here, but not new to the site, I have been coming here for the past 2 months since I purchased my 1977 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz. So far this site has been very useful and I have learned a lot about Cadillac, and my specific Cadillac, so I figured it was time to register!

Anyway I am doing some bodywork to my eldo and I need to know how to remove the chrome trim around the Landeau top. If anyone could help me out I would much appriciate it!

Also how do I add my own custom avatar on here? Thank you all!:D

Parked under a big oak tree about 4 weeks ago and it rainsx, then developed some light green to black mold spots on the tan canvas. Took it to a wash place with water spray only and took some of it out. Don't want to use any type of cleaner as I'm afraid that it will spot. Any ideas? Perhaps just take it a couple more times and see what happens. Will never park under that tree again. Thanks

someone please help me with my horn! When I press on the switch (steering wheel), I can hear the relay switching, but no horn, so I removed the relay and jumped the secondary terminals. When i did this the horn blew, so I know its not the horn or the wiring after the relay. Like I said, I hear the relay switching, so I know the problem is not between the steering wheel and the relay. Oh yeah, i swapped the relay with one of the others, with no success. ANY IDEAS??

Adding an Amp and Subs?

Hey guys, I am trying to add an amp withtwo subs. I already know where I am hooking everything up as it should be easy with the battery right there in the back seat. The question I have is about the in-line convertor that will be needed to switch the wire from the original rear sub to an RCA type to run to the amplifier.

Most In-Line Convertors are atleast two channel, and since there is only one subwoofer (the orginal) that I am going to be running the convertor from there would only be one RCA jack to plug in- what should be done to get it to work properly. Should I split the wire and make it two each (pos) and (neg) and run it to the convertor so that it is set up stereo or (2 channel) so both RCA jacks can be plugged into the amp?

Please leave advice if you know anything about doing this and maybe a brief description of how you did it.

THANKS!
