94 Seville-Turn signals not working, smoking?

Remove this ad
About three weeks ago, a slight electrical smell and some smoke came from my '94 Seville SLS steering column, then last week the turn signals just stopped working and the security light came and remains on.
Has any one else had this shorting problem? How can I correct this, or is this a job for the dealer?

Thanks

Dan

Re: 94 Seville-Turn signals not working, smoking?

This problem can commonly be associated in alot of cases with aftermarket radio installations. That does not mean that is what is happening hear but I will speak on that as I have commonly seen it. The aftermarket stereos pull more juice then what would normally be supplied the excess of heat can cause the wires in that section to melt. This is a safety feature of sorts as the insulators of these wires will melt at different points and not letting the heat get out of hand. This will usually ground out the problem area so that it can not catch fire. With lose of functions and smoking this will have to be a job for some one who has an extensive electronic back ground. As the wiring segment that is affected will have to be replaced and the root problem will have to be assest with no power to the components. The dealership or a master electriction neither will be cheap. I would not let any one you do not trust deal with this problem. There are many ways to rig wiring to where it will work for a short period of time. These methods can cause more damage and can risk fire. This will not be a cheap fix and do not trust anyone that makes it sound like it is.
