Important Need Help on Problem with 1981 Cadillac Coupe Deville.

I have a 1981 Cadillac Coupe Deville with a 6.0L 8-6-4 engine. The car was working fine until about a year ago I had a problem with the horn, so I parked the car in my garage and several weeks later the battery went dead. Time went by and this week (Jan. 2006) I towed the car in to get a new battery, relace the horn pad and put it back on the road.
The car with the new battery: you can here it turn over [it sounds fine], put it wont start.
There seems to be power to parts of the car, dashboard, head lights, power windows, but there is no electrical powewr to the fuel injectors, distributer, turn signals (but the hazard lights work), and the ECC display shows the temperature but when I put it into diag. mode the display only shows 2 dots (no other codes such as 88, etc.). Interior lights work, radio works, just the items listed above have the problem.

Any advice or help would be gratly appreciated as I really want to keep this car as it means a lot to me. Is there a relay, fuse, link, sensor or wiring harness that would cause this. I am in Long Island, New York so even if anybody knows a place out here for this car to be repaired please let me know as the shop it is at now is clueless and I'm afraid they may damage
the car more as they really don't know the car. I even had to leave them my copies the the cars service manuals and wiring diagrams.

    Please help !!!!!!

    Thanks, Clarence

    Hi Clarance,

Your horn relay coil is probably cooked. When it gets cold the horn pad switch will close as if someone is trting to use the horn. Some people pull the connections under the hood to the horns. This leaves you with a horn relay that is always pulling current and slowly killing batteries. After a while the relay coil goes up in smoke and takes out a fuse or fusable link.
Pull the horn relay out and start looking for open fuses. I don't have that shop manual anymore so I dunno which one.
With a little patience you should be able to get this car running without making some shop rich.

    To The Ape Man,

Thank you for your advice. My car was back on the road today. It took only 2 hours to find the trouble and fix it by following your advice. I tested it out with a nice 7 mile drive.

    Thanks again.

I also have a 1981 Coupe De Ville V8-6-4 which I am trying to restore for my son. I was replacing the window channels, and my power windows stopped working. I checked the wires with an ohm meter and there is no power on the wires leading to and from the power window switch. The windows are stuck in the down position. I tried supplying power to the switch just to get the windows up, but this resulted in an arc. I am assuming I have a ground somewhere in the wiring, but I don't have a wiring diagram. Can anyone help me locate a diagram or help me find where the fusible links are in this car?

Take the window switch control out of the armrest and look at the wires/switches. Chances are they've corroded or just burnt out.. I had this problem, window got stuck in the down position. You can find the switches on the NAPA website.
