Just finished a brake job on my wife's Silhouette. One of the pads had separated and the thing was shuddering like a whore in church. What a PITA! The disc brakes weren't bad, but since it's been 20 years since I did any brake work, I'd forgotten what a pain drum brakes can be. You need four freakin' hands to assemble those damn things!
Then last night about midnight, my very last bolt on the front caliper had a bad thread where the pin bolt goes in - I was making up new swear words at that point.
Anyway, thanks to the guys at NAPA, I found a tap to clean up the threads this morning, and she's back in the stopping business. Which is good, because now I can take a nice air conditioned ride in the caddy...
Oh man, that reminds me of when my dad did the brakes on his brother's '92 F-150 4x4. Took him 3 days to do new rotors/ calipers and shoes all because of the 4x4 hubs not acting right or something when he had them apart.

Same here. I do believe that I will never own another car that doesn't have discs at all four corners. I just did all four rotors and pads on Friday, and was done in two hours, including clean-up. This sounds like a decent time, but consider this. I had knee surgery on May 1st. I am still in a full leg brace, that doesn't allow my leg to flex. Needless to say, clean-up time (putting tools away in my basement) took way longer than it should have. I can remember doing drums, having every part I needed laying in front of me, and it taking an hour per side easily. Sometimes it took that long to get the drum off (damn star adjusters). I love disc brakes.
Rookies... If it takes me 30 minutes to do a brake pad & shoe change on any of my old Mopars, I stopped for an ice water & smoke... Add another 10 minutes to get tools out, jack & J-stands, etc., then put them away again.
I just did the rotors on the Q. It would have been easy if not for the AWFUL HUMIDITY. Ugh. I need a climate-controlled garage. When I was done my heart was racing and I was feeling dizzy from exhaustion.

I used to hate replacing shoes on drum brakes too until I bought myself a tool kit for drum brakes. Made all the difference in the world. It's amazing how easy a job can sometimes be with the right tools!
