If I was buying a Quattorporte I wouldnt see it as a luxury car to be honest, its a sports car with plush fittings.

Its effectively a four door Ferrari... Maseratis used to be far more than that, but I'd take a Quat over a Ferrari 612, simply because it looks nicer.

The problem with it, imo, is that its just not sporty tho. Honestly I think its super-sexy. Gorgeous. But its just not sporty. I've driven a CLS500, and I firmly believe a CLS55 will handle better then the Q, ride more comfortably around town, and be a much more pleasing car to drive regardless of how you use it.
Haha, I sound like I'm downing it because i am, I was really dissappointed in it. I just hope I drove a beat version.
I will say this tho, the exhuast note is very very nice

It has indeed got a nice exhaust note. I dont think it's trying to be all things to all men.

Jaguar XJR = Big, fast car for mature tastes

BMW 745i = Big, boring car for the younger executive

Mercedes Benz S500 = Smooth executive cruiser for that middle aged guy with two kids and a wife

Masser Quattroporte = Big, fast sports car with four doors for the family - the car guy's executive car.

The Quattroporte is a car for specialist tastes, you need to be experienced with Italian cars before you buy one or I think youd be disappointed.

The sad thing is tho, its just not that fast. A CLS55 is almost a full second quicker in the 1/4. In fact, I think the XKR is quicker then the Q.
Ya gotta drive the Q, its nothing to write home about. But then again, I only had it for about 20 mins, so...

I've driven an F360, too, which is downright incredible, so an F430 should be even better. By far, my favorite car available to buy right now, possible ever.

Rolls-Royces are one of the few car companies you can stereotype.

Cadillac...sure it has alot of older owners, but there were lots of young owners even before the new A&S theme.

Rolls Royce THEMSELVES say their car is for the older elite with incredibly deep pockets.
My boss owns an RR Phantom. He's very very close to being 70. I had lunch with him awhile back and as we got into my car, he commented on how my car looks just like his niece's (she owns a 300c awd, I've got a CTS). He also said to me, why drive with a manual when there are autos available? They got rid of manuals back in the 70's. Very nice guy, very smart guy, but not in the least when it comes to cars.

Rolls themselves stereotype their owns cars, and its for a good reason.

So what is the car for? It doesn't handle well, its not fast in a straight line, and the tranny is so unsmooth and rough thats its impossible to be luxurious around town.
I know its a crossover vehicle of sorts, blending 4 dr sedan luxury with coupe performance, but it just doesn't do either well.
Your dads buddy may like it more then the XKR, but I don't know why...That XKR only loses out in the rear seat room.

Yeah, I think it would be very interesting to see some sales guides and demographics information from the 60's, 70's and '80s for Cadillac.

And finally my $1600 94 Mark VIII, 80k miles

(Converted to springs, but my camera's busted so I don't have a new pic.)

That '76 is a sweet car, one of the last years for full instrumentation in the Continentals, plus its got the ribbon style 120MPH speedo! By the looks of it, hes got red velour interior.

How did you get your VIII so cheap? Looks like all it needed was a grille and new springs.

Re: Luxury Car appreciation thread (non Cadillac)

I really like my friend's 76 as well, the speedo is cool, I'm glad it has full size rear window rather than the 'port hole' kind on alot of Lincolns. It's actually just a red cloth interior, which has some minor fading. I told him he should get it recovered with velour, because velour is awesome, but he's spending all his car money on his 86 Thunderbird with a 500ci engine swap and neglecting the poor Lincoln.

I got The Ocho cheap because of the bad air ride (driving the 700 miles back with no front suspension was HORRIBLE,) the broken grille, and the clearcoat is oxidising. I'm just going to use some rubbing compound to get the oxidization off, then wax it. Then when I can afford it I'll have it painted with the original color (which I call money green.) I figure with a 12 year old car, I may as well go with one that has bad paint and have it repainted for $1k instead of paying $1k more for a car with better paint. Plus Mark VIIIs are just tending to go cheap these days for whatever reason - works out well for me though!
