They all get good fuel economy, have good/cheap parts availability, and are cheap to insure.
I'd snag me a 2005 Supercharged Monte SS in a heartbeat

I'm not sure that'd be the best first car for many of the teens on the road out there...

Most of those GM SC3800 cars are in the hood now . Seems they go directly from old people cars to hood rat cars.

A Toyota or a used Kia. They never break.

Both our kids had them and we never had any trouble with either one. We are talking about a car for a kid, not an adult.

One of my friends from high school has an 01? TDI Jetta with a manual. He absolutely loves it. He said it gets great mileage (mid 50s mpg in normal driving and 40mpg if he beats on it) and has been cheap to maintain

The manual/diesel VW's are pretty damn stout. Aunt has a 2000ish Beetle with over 200k on it. She's had it for 3 years now, never any major grief other than the shocks being shot on it. Says she gets 50mpg out of it.

The gas powered ones, I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole.

I would avoid 02+ 2.5s. They suffer from engine failures, electrical (alternator) issues, and cheap cats. The 3.5s are pretty good. The 93-01s are spectacularly dependable but hard to find with reasonable mileage.

My brother and parents bought '00 Altimas a week apart. My brother's had constant trans/linkage issues and my parents' had electrical issues and water leaks in the trunk.

It felt as though they were made to fall apart on purpose as they neared 100,000 miles...
