With our volunteer military service, they are getting the best men and women in our country, and returning them better.

If you get a chance to convince him to stay his twenty, please do. All my friends who were in more than 3 years, all regret not sticking out the twenty. Except for the one who is retired from service with twenty, and 13 years into a private sector retirement plan! By the time he gets 8 in, things are getting pretty gravy, stay for the retirement.

I think he was wise picking his assignment, my best friend was a Ranger, that training ain't no joke! The stories he tells will curl your hair!

Even going into the reserves afterwards will get you a pension. That, with a civilian job will position you better for retirement

He does plan on going into the reserves afterwards.

He was actually allowed a call earlier. He called his mother and me. He says thank you to everyone, and "I got no problem with it." (Serving).

Well, it was a good 2 weeks, but he's going back today. His plane leaves at 6:00, we'll be leaving for the airport in a while.

He'll be finishing up his training in Texas, and then stationed in Maryland, initially at least. He's not sure when he's visiting again, possibly March.

Re: My best buddy ships out for personal training today

I am glad to hear you guys are keeping in touch with your friends. I really regret losing touch with my best friend from high school when he went to boot camp and then Ranger School.

I was never great at writing letters, and in my young party days it was even harder to find time to write. By the time he returned eight years later I was busy with married life and we saw little of each other.

The good news is we reconnected about ten years ago, and are as close as ever again, but I still feel bad about the lost years, and being a poor friend.

He's wearing a red shirt. Per Star Trek rules, red shirt dies first. Hahah just kidding. Best of luck to him!

God, I was just a few months past 18 when I went through MEPS at Ft. Gillem.
