With all the new members, and old, in the upper Midwest I would think Madison, Wisconsin would be a great place for a Fall or Spring get together for Forum members. It is certainly centrally located and easy to get to for those in Minnesota and Illinois, not to mention Wisconsin.
Plenty of good restaurants, no real traffic hassles, lovely lakes and parks. For those that haven't seen it the state capital building is a real masterpiece, resembling the federal capital on a smaller scale, but with higher quality materials and craftsmanship. And open to the public!
Of course there is the campus of the University of Wisconsin - Madison, which is, itself, considered to be one of the most beautiful in the country. The Union offers a great meeting place in the Rathskeller (beer hall and cafeteria in the basement of the Union) and a great large patio overlooking the Lake Mendota and the sailing club. And there is just the general fun of being on a campus with the various stores and other activities.
The Fall begins in Madison in another few weeks and is one of the best Fall seasons in the country. While Spring can't compare with that of the Southeastern U.S. it is still very nice as things come alive after a cold Winter.
Well just thought I'd suggest it. With all the new members from the region and the skipping of the annual get together for Chicago Auto Show having kind of fizzled out, I thought this might be something new and different.
This sounds fun...Hell of a drive though. But I could possibly justify it, due to the immense number of important stops in between. Hell, if I could swing through Pennsylvania, I could show up in...something truly spectacular...
I would be thrilled to host a meet here in Madison. I also have vacation time I could take so I would be free to show you around. I have tools to use to hit the several yards with old Cadillacs. I would have to do some checking, but there are a few empty storefronts in the mall, and I could probably open one up for sleeping bag use for members who didn't want to get a motel room. There are also several local county campground on the lake for tent campers. I would be glad to help with motel arrangements to find a good rate for those interested.
Anyone interested in the SS Badger as Matt mentioned, here is their site. Their season ends in mid Oct.
They also offer packages to Road America Races. http://www.ssbadger.com/
^^^Hey, remember what "Playboy" said about U of W - Madison, "you'll notice that the University of Wisconsin (Madison) is not listed among the top ten party schools in the country ..... that is because we choose not to rank professionals with the amateurs!"
I have however considered purchase of a Coupe Du Fleur in the past. If I ever bring one to one of our meets, I promise ice and beer. (I imagine the police will pull me over twice as often (usually around once every ten miles) doing that)
Well, since there seems to be interest, lets attempt to set a time and get it solidified so plans can be made by people interested.
How about the students who are serious start by posting their spring break times and see if any period lines up? The rest of us will need off from work but could be more flexible I assume.:noidea:
I know the snow and other extreme weather has put a damper on a Madison, WI get together, but now that Spring has actually arrived perhaps it's time to think, again, about an upper Mid-West get together!
I've got a restaurant/bar In Milwaukee that would be great for a meetup. My hall has a full bar, restrooms, house pa and can hold 200 people. If you guys wanna do it, I volunteer my place. www.towertonight.com to see some pics.
