Road Trip Stories, Part Two...Forum's Choice Edition.

    All right, y`all,
So, here is Part Two of Road Trip Stories. This time, ya'll get to choice which story and pictures you want to hear. Do you want to read about and see photos from the Atlanta Auto Show earlier this year, or do you want my last minute run to Memphis, TN for the Cars'N'Coffee Poker Tour and Drag Race? I've got plenty of pictures for both!

Poker run it is! I'll have the photos up tonight or tomorrow. Be warned, it isn't the table poker you're all thinking of!

Re: Road Trip Stories, Part Two...Forum's Choice Edition.

    Day One and Two complete!

    And now...for the promised photos!

    ----------

So, back in May, I had made the decision to attend Advanced EMT school in the Fall Quarter(aka RTF now). Given the time demands of going to school full time for nine months, I decided that I needed one good run across several states before I was short on both days off and cash. I was browsing the Southeast section of CF and noticed a link for the "Cars'n'Coffee Memphis Poker Tour, May 25th, 2013.". So, I wrangled a weekend off from my boss, called a friend living in Southaven, Mississippi(a few miles below Memphis on the TM/Miss. line), and made plans to attend.

    Friday, 24 May 2013.
Off work at 2300. I smell like sweat, garage, caffeine, and antipathy. Quick shower. Run to gas station, fill tank, check oil and fluid. Grab 5 Hour Energy, aka bottled Caffeine'N'Hate. Depart from Atlanta on I-20 Westbound for Memphis at 0015, 25 May. I have 384 miles to cover between Atlanta and Memphis, with the event starting at 0800. Not a lot of nap time for this guy.

    Saturday, 25 May 2013
First sammich stop at 0100-something near GA/Bama line. Scarf down chicken quickly. Take obligatory car picture. Saddle up and ride again. Cross into Sweet Ole 'Bama at 0115.

0230-ish. Entering Birmingham. Nothing to see at night. the connector between I-20 and US-78 is under total construction, so I have to improvise and swing northbound on I-65, take a back road, and get on 78W.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._Route_78#Alabama
On paper, US-78 through Alabama and Mississippi shouldn't really impress or interest anyone. It cuts through sparsely populated areas of both states. But that's the main reason I like it. It runs as an open two-lane highway with overpasses, not intersections, just like an interstate. Police presence is minimal, and traffic is light even in the broad daylight. I think I stayed between 75 and 85mph the whole way. I got tired as hell as I approached the Mississippi line, so I pulled over exactly one mile after crossing over, found a rest stop, and slept. The rest stops in Mississippi hire armed security officers, and I was riding with Sgt. Glock, Badge # =357, so I felt safe about napping there. One hour later, woke up, cranked up, downed caffeine shot, hauled ass again.
Obligatory car shot, at Wal-mart, buying Brad Paisley album for the trip.

Since my CTS is the very definition of a comfort zone, and I was hauling ass across my beloved Dixie, this song got played. A LOT.

Pulled into the Firestone parking lot in Memphis. Literally just myself and two Camaros there, plus an event tent and workers. Then, a flood of American road chariots with loud, angry engines and angrier exhausts pulled in like the Coming of Odin.

    Hats off to this guy..

Re: Road Trip Stories, Part Two...Forum's Choice Edition.

So, the event was called a Poker Run. Starting at the Firestone lot, each driver was given a slip with their information and markers for each card in a regulation playing deck. At each of the five stops, you drew a card and marked it on your slip. The result was your "hand", which you turned in at the Memphis International Raceway for a prize drawing. $10 also got you unlimited dragstrip runs at MIR. I made about twelve or so, iirc. More on that later.

I was there by myself, and being a fan of the Fifth Generation Camaro, I wondered over to where the Camaro5 guys and girls had set up. Wonderful folks! I was also unfamiliar with the city, so I asked them if I could drive with them. They said yes, and off we went.

Active Duty Devil Dog drives this one.

    Go-Pro operator had this one.

After many drag runs, needed sleeps, and a link-up with a friend, I let my friend Josh, a Firestone tech, drive the CTS to Memphis Barbecue in Southaven. Sarah is quite good at making impressions!
You have not had `Cue until you've had dry, smoked ribs. These things put me out like a light until 1400, 26 May.

    Sunday, 26 May 2013.
I woke up around 1400, said goodbye to Josh and his sweet wife, Savannah. Both of them were awesome hosts! Anyway, it was time to saddle up again and ride back to Georgia. This was a much more relaxed run, and I took my time. I did stop in Tupelo to get my sister something special.

Re: Road Trip Stories, Part Two...Forum's Choice Edition.

The rest of the ride back on 78 East was just a good run through the country. There was hardly any traffic, so I gunned it in several spots in Alabama. By gunned it, I mean there were stretches where I ran 115pmh for miles on end. An open road like that can make such speeds feel like a standstill.
Obligatory caffeine intake/fluid release stop and car shot in Jasper, Alabama. Those of you who have me on Facebook will recall a very similar shot of my Deville from three years ago in this exact spot.

Alabama scenery NOT taken at 115mph..

Random detour leads to random county road, which dead ends at a random church.

Made it home Monday, 0200. Here I am parked in front of my home in Decatur.
