My Caddy was free and I bet I spent over $5K in maintenance over the last 13 years. Most expensive free car ever!

For low maintenance costs and general low cost of ownership I recommend an older Ford Ranger. Everything about them is nearly bulletproof. Front brakes, rear shocks, and one set of spark plugs is about it for 120,000 miles. Insurance is way cheaper for young guys with a pickup.

The father of one of my neighbors has one with 150k+ on it (one of the boxy ones from the early 90s). While the body is starting to get crusty (its a work truck he uses out in the country so he might not wash the underbody that well), he said the mechanics on it are easy to work on and very reliable, and that he would recommend it as a vehicle.

So I guess this guy never came back? That's a shame. I'm helping another friend look for a 2K car right now. It's pretty difficult, but he is really picky too.

High mileage RWD 1990 Brougham for $1,000. Unfortunately, it's in Indy. http://indianapolis.craigslist.org/cto/4021580321.html
