First time caddy owner seeks advice

Hey Folks, my mother is giving me a Cadillac Deville, I think it's a 1996 and it has the northstar engine. The car is in beautiful shape but obviously older and some issues are bound to arise.

I joined the forum hoping to get some advice, especially on what to not do.

The car is about 1100 miles from where I live so I will take a bus or train to her place and drive it back. The last thing I want to do is put the wrong oil/coolant/gas in the car. I really hope to look after this car, it's an awesome car and an unbelievably generous gift.

So I'm keeping the message brief in hopes that an informative dialog follows.

    Thanks in advance.

Hello, ME++, welcome to the Forums! You will find plenty of help here to keep your '96 Cadillac in great shape.

I have a 1995 Seville STS that I use as my daily driver and it performs the job very well. Don't let the all the talk about Northstar engines having problems scare you as in all probability you will be one of the majority of owners who will not have problems. Looking forward to hearing about your trip brining your new to you Cadillac home.

I advise reading the owner's manual before setting out. It will tell you all the basics you need to know about the car and how everything on it works. IIRC, this generation of Northstar is recommended to have premium unleaded fuel.

These are wonderful cars. They can be picky, but if you take care of them, they will take care of you.

Oil? Go into Walmart and pick the bottle of 10W-30 you like the best. 7.5 quarts. No more, no less.

Coolant? Green or Dex, doesn't matter. Fill the surge tank HALF FULL when the engine is COLD. Change it every three years tops.

Gas? 87 octane is just fine. The ignition system will adjust the spark accordingly to safely run 87. 91 is "required" (recommended) but isn't necessary unless you're towing, racing, or think you're racing like a kid I know

Keep tire pressure at 30 psi.

Read your owner's manual from cover to cover. Twice. It will help a lot.

Go up to the black bar at the top of the page and snoop around in the Technical archives. That will give you some good info and explain why occasional full throttle operation is good for Northstars

Good luck and Welcome! Let's see the Cadillac!

Wow! thanks for the replies so far. It will be a few months before I pick up the car (end of summer) so I'd rather know what I need to know before hand rather than later while a mechanic explains 'you should have done this...'. I will certainly post a pic when I pick up the car and do my best to educate myself in the meantime.

Just an F.Y.I., 7.5 is not critical. I use 7 at an oil change just to make it easier. Otherwise Luke pretty much summed it up in post #4.

Sorry I'm late to the party, wanted to let some guys with info go first. Mom's a Cadillac gal, so at least we know you were raised right!

Sounds like a great woman and a fun road trip for you. Have fun reading up on the new car, and have the CF mobile app on your phone for any roadside advice needs!
