It had four gear ratio's for the rear end available with the 454 so I am thinking it is either 4:10 or a 4:56 as the thing gets up to speed quick and feels like pure power until you hit 80, then it feels like it needs another gear. I have not had a chance to look up the codes on the SPID so I have no idea what rear end it has yet. It really does drive like a brand new truck though. It is really wierd truck. Manual rear window with no rear defroster, no tape deck and Silverado trim with no third row seat.

Edit: I just looked up the SPID code GT4 on the label and it appears to have only a 3:73 with a G80 posi. Swear it was a taller gear based on the driving impressions.
That's probably the best compromise rear end for your needs. The TH400, if in good condition, is near bullet proof but too bad it doesn't have an over drive. That's probably why it is near bullet proof though. There are a lot of improvements for your drive train, should you want to stroll down that path. The 454 can be a beast for torque. Hope you enjoy it as long as you have it!

Hey man, Organize before They rise.

My Zombie Plan involves my Mack truck. Better escape vehicle, because while I have never tested it, I think it can drive through a sea of people without even budging. By then though, my plan would take me back North.

That's also why I'm bored (though I'm really more restless/antsy/anxious). Long story that you'll probably all get to hear parts of over the next few years when this week is over, but it DOES involve my Mack, The North and quite possibly Zombies. I have to find something to do, between stops we've been making for various reasons. Be back in Florida tomorrow. Not really excited to be back in Florida, it's...other things.

ADD is a myth created by for/by Generation Y to explain their behaviour and even worse, that of their spawn.

Maybe "Adult Discipline Disorder" would be a more appropriate terminology.

Re: I'm Thinking about buying a 3/4 ton 1989 suburban

Should I buy the 89 back? The guy I sold it to is a friend and he just asked if I wanted it back. I have my 1991 now which is a lot nicer. but I am not driving it in winter. The 89 is a nice truck and he fixed the annoying exhaust leak it had. I am seriously thinking about it. It would be nice to have one I could drive in winter. Too bad it isn't 4x4 though, cause I need a plow truck.

    Whaddyall think?

and my 91 just cause it is sooooo pretty!

Re: I'm Thinking about buying a 3/4 ton 1989 suburban

If it were 4wd, I'd say go for it. 2wd just isn't cutting the mustard where you live. You said you needed a plow truck, well go buy a plow truck. I've heard Fords with the 7.3 Powerstroke diesel are pretty unkillable, but the 90's models do tend to rust like crazy.

Personally for a plow truck, I'd go for an old 4wd 90's Chevy. I'm not sure how much "truck" you really need to plow snow, but a 3/4 ton or 1 ton with the TBI 350 or TBI 454 is pretty much unkillable. Not a speed king, but it has the torque at off idle speeds that make it great for that application. A gas engine is a lot easier to start when its 30 below zero, plus those heavy duty trucks came with the old TH400 or heavy duty 4L80e trannies depending on year, which are much more durable than the 700R4/4L60e in the 1/2 ton trucks. Once again, the tin worm is much more of an enemy than catastrophic mechanical failure on a well maintained truck.

Re: I'm Thinking about buying a 3/4 ton 1989 suburban

I sold it cause he offered me $1100 more than I had in it. Now he wants to sell it back to be for $500 less than I sold it to him for (1400). So I get it back and still pocket $600 for doing nothing. I am on the fence but it is a nice truck for the money. He even fixed the annoying exhaust leak it had when I had it.

    Decisions decisions!

I wouldn't think a two wheel drive (light rear end) truck would be very good for plowing.

I am not going to plow with it, I just said I should probably buy a plow truck instead. I have a long driveway and I am sick of hiring out plowing.
