It looks like they cut down half a rainforest for the plastiwood trim. It also looks like this one has "touch screen" climate controls. Were these the annoying "high tech" buttons that used a thin plastic film?
I have fond memories of the 98 and Park Avenue. Family members had them when new or very slightly used and compared to a very lightly optioned '84 Ciera Brougham, they were quite a step up. Standard versions weren't anywhere near European cars but for their time and corporate culture, they could have been worse. I still have a brochure of the '87 or '88 98 Touring Sedan somewhere in the basement--that was pretty sharp for then--console, real walnut trim, seats similar to those in the short body Eldo Touring Coupe/'91 STS. Found a clean '88 one on CL..
I wasn't around in the 1970s so thank you for sharing your experiences.
I share your disappointment in the domestic luxury field as well in the 1970s/1980s. the Cimmaron, 4.1 V8, the carburated brougham that was available in 1990!- interesting how it went downhill so fast.

I have been looking for a trashed Touring sedan to rip off the woodtrim to put into my Ultra. Hopefully that Touring Sedan sells- most people don't know what they are.
There seems to be 2-3 (1989-1990) Ultra's for sale currently. The rims don't seem to be very common.
There ARE bright spots...they're just very few and far between. GM did get one or two things right in the 80s and easily the most important was the 3.8L. One of my cousins had an '85 Century T-Type with the 3.8 (don't remember if it was 125- or 150hp) but that was solidly brisk even in '87-'88 when she owned it. I remember it had a tiny strip of little LEDs for a tach right where the PRNDL indicator might have been and it was faster than the '87 Taurus LX 3.0L my folks bought new.
Speaking of Ford...they had the '84-'85 LTD LX..."H.O." V8 with 165hp stuffed into the RWD Fox platform and then of course there's the Mark VII LSC. My grandfather had an '86 LSC back in about '89 or '90 (got to ride in it once or twice) which my grandmother hated. Then again, she hated a lot of the cars he owned..
I had a 87 Park Ave and it was a total POS... actually almost kept me from buying another one. Sucky paint, everything impossible to work on... Did like the hood. Oh and it had a luggage rack...lovely.
sorry to hear that Rodnok01- I have had good luck with mine so far, air filters and Mass air flow sensor and spark plugs weren't too bad to replace on mine
is there anything I should watch out for? - the electronics seem a bit wonky in mine.
