I've had alcohol before, I just find it really gross. Not really sure what all the hullabaloo is about.

That was 45 years ago and since that time I have asked many doctors the same question and all of them said "there is no such thing as an allergy to alcohol." Having lived in the Orient and having had several friends of Oriental descent here in the States, I can tell you that when these people try to drink alcohol they become very flushed, sometimes have difficulty breathing and become sick to their stomach. One of my very good friends almost died when they administered a drug that was in an alcohol base at the hospital where she was being treated. At the time, the doctors said it was impossible, but those of us who knew her knew exactly what had caused flushing and breathing problems.
It's well-documented that many Asians lack a key liver enzyme necessary for processing alcohol. The symptoms are as you describe. It's rare in Caucasians, but not unknown. People with this condition must be cognizant of ethanol in any form, such as ethanol found in medicinal preparations.

I've got Ray's back here. I've tried all sorts of alcholic beverages, from microbrew ales and lagers to the best wines and champagnes to the finest of distilled spirits. No matter what the drink, even if it's a mixed drink, I find the alcohol makes it so bitter it's nonpotable. Although it makes me a Philistine of the first water, I'll have to stick with Diet Pepsi. And before you ask, I go with diet because the regular stuff makes me pack on the pounds like Ricki Lake and Kirstie Alley combined at an all you can eat buffet.

Thanks for the info on it now being recognized that there is an inability of some people, particularly Asian folks, and some Caucasians not being able to tolerate alcohol. The last lime I discussed it with a doctor was about ten years ago, he was an Indian fellow and didn't disagree, we ended up agreeing that if the it looked like an allergy (symptoms) consistently occurred to an individual we have to call it an allergy. I am glad that more research has been done and the problem is now known. I wonder how many Asian people died because of the unwillingness of U.S. doctors to recognize the problem.

It's not technically an allergy, it's an inborn error of metabolism. Essentially, since their livers cannot process the ethanol, they develop the symptoms of ethanol poisoning, which can be fatal.

I realize that it is not an allergy .... but it simplifies understanding the problem for the layman.

Diet Pepsi is one of the few diet drinks I can tolerate.

And I always knew Craig was a smart one.
