    Your favorite car of the 80's . . . .

Well with all of the crappy cars that were built in that decade, it makes the few good ones seem extra special. Feel free to post cool stuff that was sold only in Europe/Australia/Japan, etc.

    I have three favorites . . .

    1. The DeLorean

    2. Turbo Buick/Grand National Most people didn't know that you could get that same 3.8 turbo v6 from the Grand National in any trim of the Regal. Hence such weirdness as this 1987 Regal Limited. Thus optioned with vinyl roof, pillow bench seat, column shift, and the 3.8 turbo mill. This one also runs a 10 second et http://gmhightechperformance.automot...ted/index.html

    3. Pontiac Trans Am GTA Probably my favorite looking Trans Am, it just looks so sleek and uncluttered compared to the 2nd and 4th gen cars. The 350 TPI cars were good performers for their day as well.

'87 Supra Mark III - Inline 6, 5 speed, LSD, a wicked handler for the time, and my favorite body style Supra as far as appearance.

Otherwise, I'll add the obligatory Ferrari Testarossa.

The Buick Grand Nationals still have style IMO. Obviously the GNX is the best of the grand national cars made.

The 1989 Pontiac Firebird with the V6 turbo GNX engine that served as a pacecar is still the fastest production firebird ever made. I would love to own one.
The above post is my 2 cents....nothing more.

Cadillac Brougham, DUH. Plus, it could be purchased new in some for or another in any year during the eighties AND it came in several dozen Hearse varieties.

For the last twenty years though, you could buy a new DeLorean, as the parts were all manufactured long before the company went under. In fact, last month, August 2011, a limited number of DeLoreans were produced for sale. Not sure how many or how much they want...

When it comes to the 80s, I tend to prefer BMW, Nissan, and Saab, but MB built some truly world-class stuff, especially the 86-95 W124:

And the W126 because it kept the Bluth family together.

Although it was a latecomer to the eighties (1989) my favorite would have to to be the Mazda Miata MX5. It filled its' niche so well that the same essential car is still with us today. I also like the BMW 6 series coupes, but they were really seventies cars which were carried over through the eighties.

Maybe it's because I like sportier things (on the whole), but I can't see anything attractive about those 80s Benzes (aesthetically speaking).

Dunno. Solid cars, but just not very good looking to my eye.

The Benz's of the eighties were "stolid," perhaps well built (but very heavy), but unless you could aford over $100,000. they were slow as molasses, just like all the other cars of the eighties!

Many, around the world, thought they made great taxi cabs, especially in diesel form! But then so did the Peugeots of that era!

    Re: Your favorite car of the 80's . . . .

1980-85 Cadillac Brougham Coupe. This, to me, typifies American luxury in the '80s. Big, bold, boxy and chrome laden. A great car for the "me" decade, especially the coupes, because they were SO big, but only had two doors, making them more of a car for two than a car for five, like the sedans. I picture a rich texas oilman whenever I think of a brand new Brougham in 1982.

1986-87 Buick Grand National/GNX. Sure, they debuted the GN in '82, but they didn't get serious with the power until 1986, when the turbo 3.8 was tuned from 200hp to 235. They also lost 99% of the chrome and looked as mean as they drove. This was the fastest domestic car in the '80s and would outrun anything from Japan and almost anything from Italy...

1980-84 Buick Electra Park Avenue. A great alternative to the Brougham, not as quite as expensive or as assuming, but I'd say the interior in the Buick was nicer and had comfier seats.

1983-85 Buick Riviera T-Type. Turbocharged 3.8 V6 (190hp, 290 lb/ft) in the FWD Riviera. This was their best looking car of that era in my opinion, with a decently powerful engine that probably made it kind of fun to drive, all things considered.

But, enough of cars that debuted in the '70s and sold into the '80s, here are ones that were debuted in the '80's.

1986-89 Mercedes Benz 560SEL. The German version of the Cadillac Brougham is the easiest way to put it. Big, bold, boxy and beautiful. A much better performer than the Broughams though. I picture this as being much more of a rich doctor or lawyer's car than a Brougham. I'd imagine these were much trendier when new than a Brougham.

1987-89(92) Pontiac Trans Am GTA. I think these were the best looking muscle cars back in the late '80s. Bigger than the puny fox body Mustangs, and smoother looking than the Z28's. Has good power from the TPI 5.7 and I love the lacy gold wheels and optional digital dashboard, so very '80s!

1988-91 Oldsmobile Ninety Eight Touring Sedan. Cheap, fully loaded luxury nowadays, with drivability that was untouched by other american luxury sedans.

1981-82 DeLorean DMC-12. Arguably, the most "80's" car ever.
