Cadillac Escalades are the Most Stolen Vehicles in the US

Driving a Cadillac Escalade these days? Or worse yet, an Escalade EXT SUV/pickup? If so, better pay attention to where you’re leaving it parked. For the fourth year in a row, those Escalades head the list of vehicles favored by auto thieves.

According to the latest report on late-model vehicle theft from the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI), all four versions of the 2008-10 Escalade are in demand by the criminal element, but the EXT ranks Number One. Escalades are six times as likely as the average vehicle to attract a thief, and overall theft losses are ten times the average figure.

HLDI reports that the EXT averaged 14 theft claims for every 1,000 “insured vehicle years.” That’s eight times the number of claims submitted for the average vehicle. Insurance loss payments for these EXT claims averaged $10,555.

Pickup trucks tend to be the most favored body styles—especially those from the “Detroit 3" brands—GM, Chrysler, and Ford. Second only to the Escalade is Ford’s F-250 crew-cab 4WD pickup. Eight of the top 10 vehicles on the “wanted” list are GM/Ford trucks and big SUVs, along with Chrysler’s 300 sedan (the most-sought passenger car). HLDI data includes break-ins as well as full-scale thefts, which could help account for the popularity of trucks that might hold tools or equipment.

Why on earth would anyone want a rebadged GMC giant SUV ? (They ARE very popular in downtown Washington, DC: The 7 mpg on 26's must be just wonderful - but you DO need the size to haul around a ton of speakers and amps.)

They are the most likely to be stolen (ratio of registrations to thefts), not the most stolen (total number of thefts).

The fact that everyone posting this story, including respectable news outlets, can't seem get this simple fact straight makes my head spin.

    ding ding ding ding ding!

    we have a winner!

and technically 'most likely' isn't really correct either
that would be the vehicle with the most total thefts (largest percent of all thefts... therefore most likely to be stolen)

Escalades are attractive to car thieves? This is one hell of a revelation to me! Lol...
As a matter of fact, the Honda Civic and Honda Accord top the list as the most stolen cars in the United States. Followed closely by the Camry and F150.

He's actually 3 for 5 but the other thread had a broken link that I couldn't figure out. It was old and had no replies. I deleted it.

Hey, Sal better watch out. With Escalades being so theft-popular, his is ripe for the picking. Especially with all of its bad-ass-ness.

Re: Cadillac Escalades are the Most Stolen Vehicles in the US

Still can't believe they still use old fashioned style keys for the Escalade.

The problem with this type of key(and any automotive key really, including the old 1 sided GM style) is that there are only so many possible combinations of the way the key can be cut. As the lock wears, it opens the possibility that other keys will fit into it. What this works out to is that thieves can have a set of "master" keys, like 5 or 6 different keys that will open any GM vehicle. Then he'll have another 5 or 6 keys for Toyotas, 5 or 6 Hondas.

Merecedes started using laser cut keys back in the 1980's to prevent all of these shennanigans. These are cut with a cnc machine, controlled by a computer. So there are infinite combinations, thus only that key will work that lock.

Anyways, this thread is an interesting read on keys and locksmithing IMO

Different taps and bottles provide different tasting water. I don't care what anyone says.
