Oops, I guess the 4.1 came out in '82.

Come to think of it I had an '81. It had the diesel.

Yeah, 80-81 was the 368 with that 8-6-4 thing. Which can be disabled with a simple wire snip and it'll run just fine, or so I hear.

Yup. A buddy of mine had one and did that. The variable displacement idea was way ahead of technology.

'81 had the variable displacement only. '80 was a rock solid 368 cast iron big block Cadillac V8.

I timed the E-250's 0-60 last week, fully loaded, 12.9 seconds. Not fast, but about two seconds quicker than the Astro, so it's a big improvement.

Now that I think more about it, in '81 I believe you had a choice, such as it was, of the diesel, the 8-6-4 or a V6.

Oh yeah, that's what I meant. 1981 was the only YEAR they offered the 8-6-4, but it was sold alongside the diesel and 4.1 V6.

poor astro. my 97 safari did 0-60 in 9 seconds flat. not a screamer, but damn good for a van.I still have to time the conversion van. it weighs more but has a numerically high rear end (tow package). bad thing is with the high numerical rear end (3.73 IIRC) it tops out about 105. top speed in the old van was about 115 or 120 so I've heard- most I did in it was about 100 (thats as high as the speedo goes so that must be the top speed right? lol)

I always had about 1500 lbs of weight in the van, and with 265k miles, it saw a long life. I topped it out at 97 once, never wanted to go any faster.

Re: What did you do to your car today?

my van only had about 140k on it then and I only went that fast once- was racing a 05-08 V8 charger down the highway. I couldnt pass the guy but he couldnt put any distance on me either. I'd guess I got it up to about 110 considering how long it took the needle to come off the peg after 100. When we got off the highway I pulled up next to him. he wasnt that happy. (gee wonder why? lol)

Correct. In '80 the 368 was carburetted. In '81 it got FI with the active fuel management.

In high school my best friend bought an '81 Fleetwood that the AFM still worked on. It was funny, because that still worked, but if you left the compressor for the rear shocks hooked up it would blow the fuse and kill all the lights (interior and exterior).

Re: What did you do to your car today?

I don't understand what you mean. The woodgrain goes around the cluster and radio. It really is one giant piece like that.

To remove: There are four (I think?) 10mm bolts at the top of it (note the black lip at the top, where the bolts go) that go into the dash pad. Then you open the glovebox and pop off the woodgrain piece above it (the one that has the Caprice logo). Then tilt the steering wheel all the way down, engage parking brake, put column into 1st gear, and pry gently. It's just clips.

What's the difference between the 9C1 dash and the regular Caprice dash?
