Got this truck a few weeks ago for free. The suspension, steering, transmission and driveline (4wd) are perfect, but the engine runs VERY poorly. It has good compression, but lots of misfire codes and lean conditions on both banks.

When I ran a compression test, one problem was immediately apparent - the plug gaps were all OVER .080. That's right, eighty thousandths. Spec is .052-.054. I'm surprised all of the coils are still functioning. One these models, they seem to be finicky even under normal conditions, yet they've managed to survive a decent amount of time on top of these worn plugs.

Much has to be disassembled to get at the left bank plugs, so I decided to start there as it would give me a good look at everythign - along the way I found one major vacuum leak, one small, cracked coil boots, and very worn plugs. I should be able to finish it up next time I get out there.
Sounds like all you need is new secondary igition wiring, plugs and a sound vacuum system to get that motor running right as the rain. Sounds like a fun little project!

Re: What did you do to your car today?

    finished the front suspension on the miata so I could move it to a safer place for the hurricane;

    new inner/outer TRE's, new boots
all new poly Bushings(CA's, sway links and sway bushings)
new upper and lower ball joints, actually only the lower are new, I re-booted the upper since the only way to replace those is to buy the whole CA.

The bearings were still good, so no biggie.

managed to bang the alignment good enough that it drives in a straight line (mostly)

still need to do the rear, but the only thing that hasen't been replaced up front is the rack and the brake hoses now.

    Thank you Craig

Do you still have the free maintenance? If not, I'd be curious to know what you paid. The dealership tried to charge me $190 for an oil change the last time I had it up there. Maybe for a Porsche that's ok, but not an old 3 Series.

Re: What did you do to your car today?

No maintenance plan for me, it was $95+ tax which is equal to the independent shop I go to for other things. Another dealer I called wanted $130 and I lol'd. I'm just going to buy ramps and do changes myself from now on though since it's such a simple thing to do.

However this same dealer also charges $180 for alignments where the indy shop charges $105 using the same Hunter system.

Re: What did you do to your car today?

Hmmm it's strange that all BMW dealerships aren't the same. I ended up getting the oil change for $95 as well since I told them I had a coupon for the E46 Value Service. But the alignments at my dealership are about $140 which seems to be on the low end when it comes to price.

I'm going to change mine next time as well. I can order the stuff online for $60 and it would take less than an hour in my driveway or I could have my buddy use his lift and get it done there.

Re: What did you do to your car today?

I pay $89.95 for four wheel alignment on the Hunter machine at my neighborhood Firestown. Oil change is about 39.95 plus surcharge for additional oil required by the North*.
