My 79 Regency had a distributor. I remember when I got a new one, my uncle had to adjust the timing. He had one of those strobe light guns, was doing all kinds of crazy stuff I didn't understand, and had that 6.6L purring like a kitten after a few minutes.

Can't help you. I can do brake jobs, change oil, install stereos and speakerphones, but that's where my knowledge ends. Under the hood is an unholy land for me.

Are you getting no spark at all, or is the timing just too far off to run?

Timing too far off to run. It tries to start, but backfires.

Re: What did you do to your car today?

I guess I'd first start by verifying that good spark is reaching the plugs. I'm guessing you have some spark as you say you get some popping and backfiring, but that doesn't rule out everything but timing.

Sometimes, if the cap was mishandled, the carbon "button" that contacts the center of the rotor becomes dislodged, cracked, broken, etc. It and it's spring are relatively fragile, and it's often overlooked. This will cause intermittent spark if the connection isn't solid.

You say you are following the firing order on the intake...to reattach the plug wires to the cap? You did follow it around the right way, right? The rotor rotates clockwise on those engines.

Also, you mentioning that you are aligning the #1 plug wire tower on the cap with the "coil". As with all GM HEI's, the coil is in the cap, in the center of the distributor. What exactly are you aligning #1 with? Are you positive you have the correct position for #1 on the cap?

Sorry if you already omitted some of these possibilities. Never know what someone has/hasn't done.

I did a little badging work today... The passenger side DeVille emblem was missing when I bought it, and the 32VNorthstar emblem on the trunk lid was fading and chipping. I replaced the DeVille emblem with a new one, and updated the 32VNorthstar emblem with one of the new style Northstar emblems. Hoping to completely update all of the badging soon, even a new hood ornament. =]

Checked the oil and tire pressure on Betty, loaded up the trunk with all of my framed ads and memorabilia and Hoover's travel bag. We head out tomorrow afternoon for the Kitsap Peninsula across Puget Sound from Seattle to see friends and attend a car show at the Bremerton Elks Lodge. Hope the weather cooperates.

Re: What did you do to your car today?

Worked on the brakes of my uncle's Venture. I don't know how it happened, but the front left caliper piston was sitting in the caliper braket, the inboard brake pad was gone, and half of the rotor was missing. I've never even heard of a rotor just splitting in half. The bolts that held the caliper braket in had fused to the braket itself because of the heat generated. I think it was in the worst state of disrepair I've ever seen anything.

However, after 2 hours of work, a broken 15mm socket and some sweat and cursing, there is now a shiney new brake on there.
