Re: Cars and Coffee. Minneapolis's most exclusive monthly car show.

It certainly was a nice car, but it didn't seem "1937 authentic". For example, look at the gearshift....just your typical four speed automatic. Plus, I thought all Cords had hidden headlamps. I could definitely see the influence on the '66 Toronado though.

On the way home from the car show yesterday morning, I pulled up next to one of those Ferrari 308s on the highway and thought about racing him, but didn't, but if I remember correctly, they're not very powerful or fast. Think how bad he'd feel if he got beat by a Buick! LOL!

Re: Cars and Coffee. Minneapolis's most exclusive monthly car show.

There were two or three companies making Cord replicas in those days. You are right the mid '30s Cords had retractable covered headlights.

A client of mine, back in the 1980s had a Ferrari 308 Quattrovalvole ( Hal Needham who co-wrote and directed "Smokey and the Bandit"). I road in the car several times. To be honest I don't remember if it was fas t or not ........... most everything in the eighties was slow, especially my Audi 5000S Avant! Hal's car was It. racing red and had vanity plates "ONE4HAL." I do remember that all the sixties high end sports cars of the sixties were a couple seconds faster than their equivalent 1980's brethren. I know my Lambo and E-type were. The V-12 Ferraris like Testa Rosa were probably faster. Hal's car, which like most of the Hollywood folks cars, was leased and was eventually stolen and from then he drove a Jeep Cherokee he got free from Chrysler's movie car lending facility.

It would have been pretty close. The Ferrari 308 ran 0-60 in about 6.8s.

No doubt about it, most '70s and '80 cars were more show than go. All the manufacturers were still trying to sort out all the emissions, safety, and fuel economy equiptment foisted on them by the feds. Engineering and performace took a far back seat.

The Miura is my favorite Lamborghini. Looks like you just drove off from victory lane at Le Mans, plus it was Italy's first mid-engined car.

BMW's M6 still stands the test of time, just a drop dead sexy design, and by far the company's best take on a personal luxury coupe.

Did you see my Caddy at north St. paul? I was there last Friday. I am getting sick of it though, I always have to argue that my car is old enough for there show. 75 and older. Every damn time I go they tell me to leave and I have to argue that it belongs. The I always see new cars than mine there. No one else I know has had this experience at that show. It is weird.

Awesome photos! For me, the 280SE and M6 have the most appeal. The Cord as well, but its on an entirely different, higher level than anything else there.

Here's a few quick iPhone pics from tonight's show. I'll upload more later.

    427 Vette.

    '85 Silver Spirit. $32,000.

    My favorite Mark IV again.

An extremely nice, restored '78 Mark V Diamond Jubilee Edition.

It has very comfy seats. That velour is to die for.

    And a very long hood...

The IV and V, my two favorite Lincolns.

The Silver Spirit was my least favorite Rolls-Royce of all time. L.A. was over run with these ugly cars. To me they looked like overgrown Ramblers that someone had tarted up in with a Rolls grill (which by the way being planted on all kinds of other tarted up cars of the '80s). Even the ungainly Corniche had better lines than this abortion of British coachbuilding.

I disagree with you on their design. To me, they're extremely classy and clean cut without being overwrought or decadent. Much like '80s Mercedes Benzes, their boxy design is timeless and very elegant. IMO, the best Rollers and Bentleys were the ones of this era, up until about 1997 or so when they went to the newer body style.

But when you say that LA was overrun with them, was it kinda like the 300C is now?

In certain sections of LA, Rollers, Bentleys, Maybachs, and other very high end cars are common as dirt. MBs and Bimmers are the children's cars.

Re: Cars and Coffee. Minneapolis's most exclusive monthly car show.

Here's some pics from the October Cars and Coffee meet. It wasn't nearly as nice out today (47* and rainy), so there weren't as many cars, but it was still worth going.

    S8 and R8.

    Two 911 turbo's. 993(whaletail) and a 997.

An RUF modified 911 BTR. RUF is kinda like Porsche's AMG, but they're not owned by Porsche.

New Maserati Coupe. I like this much more than the last Maser coupe.

    Continental GT.

    Old Money v. New Money.

    It's an '86 Silver Spur.

Aside from the wheel rings that match the roof, this car is extremely classy and timelessly elegant.
