    1972 Deville starter/shims problem

My starter keeps breaking because the shims aren't right. I have no idea what to do. I tried from having none to putting three on. Anyone know what I can do?/ had this problem before?

If your timing is too far advanced that will also break starters. Check your timing. Then maybe loose bolts, wrong bolts. Flywheel the wrong one or damaged.

    Re: 1972 Deville starter/shims problem

The starter on my '70 has no shims. It also has two bolts that bolt it to the block (by the nose cone) + a bracket on the back of the starter that is about 2" to 3" long that also bolts to the block. I hear (no first hand experience) that if you don't have that rear bracket, over time, your starter will break. Do you have it mounted using three mounting points?
