Exclamation Power steering causing engine to die on 71 deville

Hi yall, so when I start up my 71 coupe deville and I know for a fact the power steering pumps on its last leg, I hear some scraping probably from the barings inside the power steering, but whenever I hear that scraping, it causes the engine to start to conk out and eventually die. I'm almost certain its not a carburetor issue, its been rebuilt recently, something that could also be an accessory to this issue is whenever I put her in gear, sometimes I hear the power steering pump start to scream and the engine will die, i also know that the ignition key insert has been replaced and i have no clue if he did that correctly, could that be a problem? Also last question which is irrelevant to the engine dying i hope, is that transmission fluid is coming up from the dip stick, does this mean anything? Thanks for reading!

    MB,

You should stop driving that car until someone qualified has had a look at it. If the pump is making that much noise, then surely it is grinding solid metal into little parts and pumping them through the steering box. If it hasn't killed the steering box yet, it soon will. I'm not that knowledgeable on auto transmissions, but that's not right. No ATF should be coming up the fill pipe, unless it's drastically overfilled. What does the dipstick say? As for the engine stalling, perhaps the PS pump has SEIZED and the noise you're hearing is the belt slipping. This could cause the engine to stall, as you are putting a big strain on the pump when you turn the wheel. This may cause the faulty pump to stall and the belt stalls the engine. Perhaps cut the belt, or take it off and then take the car for a (slow!!!) drive and see what happens when you turn the wheel.

    Regards from Down Under.

The vent tube is probably clogged to, on the trans. The little tube on top Th400.JPG run some wire through it.

Remove the belt from the power steering and see if your noise / stalling issue goes away.

Yah, I agree. I bet you have a bad pump. Remove the belt and spin the pump by hand. I think you will find it hard to turn and/or it binds. Be sure to turn it in the same direction as it normally runs. If you don't want to do that, put a chalk mark or something on the pump pully so that you can see it turning, and then start the car. You will probably see the pump stop turning or turn very slowly at the same time the engine starts to stall.
