    Headlight Upgrade for 71 Eldorado

Have a 71 Eldorado convertible and would like to upgrade all four headlights. I see a lot of ads for HID Xenon but can't seem to find any for my 71. Is there an upgrade option for the 71?

You have the smaller round headlights, 5 3/4 in. diameter. I would investigate a motorcycle shop that sells that smaller diameter lamp with separate bulb. That way you can decide on wattage and maybe HID's. Remember the stock low beams are 2 filament bulbs and the hi beams are a one filament bulb. Try www.tlg-auto.com they seem to have alot of choices.

i'll check that out. have to admit i don't know much about headlights so when you talk about "smaller diameter lamp with separate bulb" i don't know what you mean, i.e. i thought headlights were all a one-piece glass bulb. i've seen ads that showed small glass elongated bulbs that looked like filaments and the ad said they'd fit the 71 Eldorado but i couldn't envision how they would work. i guess I need to investigate more. thanks for the suggestion.

You have "sealed beam" headlights meaning the bulb is sealed in the lamp. Nowadays most cars use a lamp with a replaceable bulb. Getting a newer lamp with the same diameter would allow you to get a higher wattage bulb. Your 5 3/4 lamp is what is used on alot of motorcycles today, and virtually everyone of these use a replaceable bulb.

    ----------

And once you change them out, have the lights professionally realigned!

+1 on the above idea.. you'll want to go with the halogen type with the replaceable bulb..
Look at the Hella H5006.. out of the package they'll be great, (55-60 watt i think) but you can up the wattage of the bulb if you want to.. but be careful, too much wattage may be too much to ask of the wiring without scabbing a relay into there.. I melted the factory plugs from a 69 camaro when i upgraded the wattage to 80/100. (illegally bright)

A road racing friend of mine fabricated some off road lights into the high-beams of his VW Sciorocco (SP?).. illegal as hell.. but VERY bright..

I would recommend the replacement faux sealed beams with the replaceable bulbs as well, but don't put HIDs in them. Installing HIDs in a reflector type housing that wasn't designed for them is illegal, and will just cause glare and put less usable light on the road.

Look into PIAA Intense white halogen bulbs.

Keep in mind, you will lose the functionality of the fender-mounted lamp monitors. (the '71 Eldorado has them, doesn't it?)

Can't believe the good info I got. Down to 2 questions, 1) can i only get the Hella H5006 on the internet or is it something regular auto parts stores handle, and 2) I understand there was a difference between "sealed beam" high beam and low beam bulbs; is that the case with the Hellas?

Check local stores like off road retailers and large retail chains to see if they stock the HELLA brand. The low beam sealed beam has 2 filaments thus 3 plugs on the bulb. low beam power, hi beam power and ground whereas the hi beam sealed beam has 2 plugs, hi beam power and ground. Just get bulbs that match the number of plugs on your existing lamps.

This is true, but easily remedied... When I installed the new style on my '79 Seville, I did, in fact lose the lamp monitor for the low beam. But, I simply drilled a small hole in the rear housing (in an area that is protected by the rubber boot which seals over the rear of the new halogen bulb to protect connections from moisture). Anyhow, drill the tiny hole, insert the fiber-optic line, and the small OEM metal surround on the tip of the fiber-optic line grabs on and they work just like they did for the last 35years.

I upgraded to H4 Halogen (from OPGI). The modern H4 bulbs are very bright.
The look is still the same, but I now have a lot more light!
