    jetaway hydramatic 1961

    Hi
I am looking to do some maintenance on my 1961series 62 convertible. My hydramatic slips alot between gears and I would like to know if this is normal for the jetaway or does it need a rebuild? Is it a reliable transmission when rebuilt or would I be better off changing to a more modern transmission?
    Thanks.
    Ryan

I would start off replacing the transmission oil (and clean as much sludge as possible inside) and filter and see what that does first.
As far as I know the Cadillac transmissions are very solid and reliable transmissions. So I would definately rebuild if necessary. I wouldn't even know what replacement transmission would be available that could handle the torque.

Transmission slippage is never normal. You can flush the trans, clean the filter, and see if it makes a difference, but I suspect a rebuild is in order. I know some people have upgraded to the TH400, though I don't know what exactly is involved in the swap. Good luck!

Thanks guys, I have changed the fluid and filter so a rebuild is probably in order. I live in Melbourne Australia and since I got my car I've been asked to do alot of weddings so im gonna make a buisness out of it so I want the car as reliable as possible. I've read the change over to T400 is a big job so im leaning towards keeping the hydramatic.
    Thanks again.

There should be enough rebuild kits available for ya.

And in the worst case you can ship it to have it done

I drove a lot of 1960-62 Cadillacs back when they were new and don't remember any slippage with any of them. I never heard anything bad about the transmissions in those cars back min the day.
