So I looked at a 1979 Fleetwood Brougham today.

    Hello everyone,

I've been browsing the forums for a little while and figured it was time to make an account. I was driving today and saw someone had a grey 1979 fleetwood brougham for sale and decided I would stop and take a look. My first impression.. This car needs some work man, but I'm willing to do it. The exterior was a little rough, it needed new fillers between the bumber and tail lights, had a little rust on the bumper and was going to need paint, but it was solid from what I could tell, didn't have any rot on the body or anything like that. The canvas top definitly needed to be replaced.

The paint good but it had no clear coat, I found out the owner had a friend paint it for fun and he was an amature.. It wasn't bad per say but it was going to need new paint.

The interior wasn't too bad, the carpet needed to be cleaned a bit but there werent any cracks in the dash or anything like that, it had a CB radio which I thought was cool and the leather seats weren't too worn or cracked. Very comfortable. The odometer read 99xxx.

I'm trying not to carry on too much, so after talking to the owner a bit we started the car right up and she roared lol but felt nice to drive, like floating. When we finialy started talking about price he said he wanted 3,000 for it. I was taken back at first to say the least, and looking around online he seems to be asking an awful lot..

So my question, is a 1979 Fleetwood Brougham with almost 100xxx and in need of body/ a little engine work really worth 3k? He seems to be asking too much, I like the car but I know it is going to need more money dumped in it, and not that I don't want that but I don't want to overpay on top of that. Thanks everyone! sorry for the long winded post

That's far too much. IMO, it's only worth 1k tops....new bumper is 100, a driver quality paint job is 2k or so, new vinyl top is 1k. Interior parts (if you can find them in the right color at a junkyard) are a couple hundred. I'd also bet, based on your description, that it has 199k or has had a hard life of sitting outside (given the rusted out bumper, halfassed paint job, and sundamaged interior)

I didn't want to offer him more then 1k honestly, Im going to stop by again and get some pictures at some point too. The new paint doesnt worry me too much, my neighbor (and good friend) restores cars as a hobby and would be willing to paint the car for me and give me a good price. I thought the same about the mileage also. I really want the car but i doubt they are going to be in my ballpark. It was one of those "oh all it needs is this this and this and its perfect. It's perfect except for the paint blah blah" lol. I will see what they say, worse is they say no and I keep looking. Thanks for the quick reply

    UPDATE:

The owner called me back on Friday and told said that he would let the car go for $2,700. I told him where I was at as far as all the work that was needed and that my highest offer would be 1k. We didn't exactly see eye to eye about the price or the work that was needed for the car so I have to let this one go unfortunately.

Wise decision to pass on this one.

You don't say where you are located, but it is still possible to find late seventies Cadillacs for a reasonable price. I think you were right about what you would have paid for a that needed that much work. Keep looking there is a vintage Cadillac out just for you!

    HI. Welcome to the forum.
From what you posted you should probably be glad he passed on your offer. From my experience you would be better off finding an original one that need paint, than to buy one poorly done and redo it. Who knows what you would run into under that bad paint job!

Good point, the more I think about it the happier I am with my decision, but still pretty bummed. Those late 70's broughams are my favorite. I am determined to find one and I will let everyone know as soon as I do! Thanks everyone!
