What Performance Muffler should be used on an 85 Eldorado?

    Hi all,

I wanted to ask you guys what kind of muffler I should install on an 85 Eldorado. The car has no cat and I wanted to boost some more HP out of it with a cool sounding muffler. I've read good things on Hooker Aerochambers, I'm trying to achieve that classic car sound/rumble.
Also, what is the best exhaust set-up for this car to increase HP?

    Thanks

Its a 4100...you're not gonna get much more out of it.
If you like the sound of a particular muffler, bolt it on, but don't expect it to make your 120 hp V8 a hot rod.

Be careful, more horsepower out of the HT4100 could mean an acceleration of the internal clock that starts the melt down. Good luck!
    70eldo and 70eldo like this.

Yep ---- For you a "performance muffler" = more noise, no more power.

I prefer mufflers that are on the quieter side. "Glass-packs," Thrush "soup-cans" and rice burning fart cans really don't do it for me. I'd rather have something discrete. Remember, we're dealing with a HT4100 equipped car, so that 125hp engine is not going to see a big gain, cats or not.

Thanks guys for your input, I'm tying to do everything I can to make subtle changes in increasing HP from this crappy engine.

There were a couple threads you might want to search for where one of the older members listed all the changes he made to a 4100 to make it more peppy. IIRC, he messed with the throttlebody and fuel pressure and a couple other tweaks and gave it an additional 20 or so hp (which would make it livable, at least until it grenaded )

Re: What Performance Muffler should be used on an 85 Eldorado?

I used a mid 90's Chevy truck muffler, one inlet, 2 outlets. Had pipes made up to have what appeared to be dual exhaust. I used small oval tips up close to the bumper to be discrete. I used an 1981 Cadillac throttle body from a 368 (8/6/4) engine. It requires a thick base gasket because the throttle flaps are larger diameter. I also used the 4100 injectors and 84 TPS switch (same as an 85). Everything else attached to it with no mods. Set the timing to 12 instead of 10 degrees. The throttle body mod did not increase horsepower but it did raise the torque off idle up to about 50 MPH. A much more snappy engine around town. This mod will not affect fuel mileage at all and it would chirp the front tires accelerating from a complete stop at part throttle. This throttle body swap requires you to know how to properly adjust a TPS and ISC once swapped over. The timing adjustment requires the green connector to be unplugged behind the distributor so the timing light can read base timing. Once adjusted, reconnect the green connector. A 13 MM box wrench will access the distributor hold down bolt. You MUST use the 4100 injectors because the 368's will dump raw fuel into the exhaust. Ask me why my exhaust system turned cherry red before I swapped the injectors !!

You might think that it's a crappy engine and it was certainly lacking on power compared to other V8s - but with $4 a gallon gas, I was very happy with my 18/26 mpg compared to the 8/10 mpg 300hp V10 truck

Anyway, if it had more power then they couldn't use those ultra soft squishy seats that I so enjoy We'd have to have bucket seats installed.
