1976 Eldorado Conv. Park Lamps & Side Markers problem

Trying to get one of the last 200 back in shape! I'm having a problem with the parking lamps and side markers. Pull the headlight switch, fuse blows. Check all connections, clean grounds, clean sockets, new fuse, pull switch, fuse blows! Install brand new GM switch, new fuse, pull switch, fuse blows! Along with this, the interior light fuse blows as soon as a new one is installed!?! Any ideas, all helpful comments and a few wise cracks will be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.

    Gary.

Interior lights fuse can be as simple as tinfoil or a dime in a lighter socket. check all 4 by removing each lighter and looking under it. Parking lights fuse blows because there is a bare wire touching metal somewhere in that circuit. That requires looking at ALL the wiring to each light affected. I would start at the trunk, looking at the taillight wiring and each side marker for a bare wire pinched. Removing each bulb one at a time prior to replacing the fuse can help pin it down.

The rear lights all work fine, all wiring has been inspected and is in good shape. The problem is with the parklamps, front side markers and cornering lamps, all signals and 4 ways work. I disconnected all front light wiring, put in a new fuse, pulled the h/lamp switch and the fuse blew! My next step will be fusible links and turn signal switch, then pull the rest of my hair out! We sold and serviced several of these back in the '70s and '80s and I've been trying to remember the "common" problems, but... Again, thanks for any help.

    Gary,

Thread bump. Did you ever solve this problem?

In my limited experience with these types of wiring problems that I could never find the culprit; more than once it turned out to be in the bulkhead/cowl connector. I've taken them apart to find something had melted, or a wire or connector had deteriorated for no apparent reason, right there at the bulkhead.

If you're still having a problem with interior lights, be sure and check that wiring as it exits the cowl and goes in to the doors.

This guy either died! or fixed it and felt he didn't have to post the repair. Old thread.
