I would start by taking serial number to a g.m. dealership, or else try a locksmith.

Re: Good day Ladies and Gentlemen

The look is absolutely wonderful for a car of its age. I would buy a complete set of locks including ignition (check www.rockauto.com) and call a mobile locksmith... Towing the car to a shop will be difficult without access to controls.

You can negotiate with the owner: If the car is really in the condition she has described, you pay the cost; else, she should pay it. If you are friends it will be easy reaching an agreement.

Re: Good day Ladies and Gentlemen

Get that vin # sorted and a GM dealer can get key # and cut brand new keys, But the car in the pictures is Fleetwood not a DeVille, so make sure she has right number. I can't wait for you to get it. Will it be your first 70's Cadillac? It is a whole different world driving one, even compared to the 81.

The VIN on that car should be 6B69R4QXXXXXX (XXXXXX = assembly serial number). The car pictured is definitely a Fleetwood Brougham. The top and interior are dead giveaways. But, you won't be able to get keys cut from the VIN, I don't think. Mobile locksmith is the way to go.

You can if the lady knows what dealer sold the car originally. The GM dealer will have the key numbers in her file and if at another GM dealer, and can prove you are owner, thus entitled to receive keys they can get the code and cut the key from it. A little more leg work but much less money!

You really think a dealer will have records of key codes going that far back, Dave?

Re: Good day Ladies and Gentlemen

Unless things have changed a lot, or the two dealerships I worked at were the odd ones, yes. The Lincoln/Mercury dealer was under it's second owner and third location, the GM store was the third owner and second location and both had all customer records going back to the twenties. I think it would be the first thing I would try. When the one dealership was sold while I worked there the records were considered an asset of the dealer to be negotiated with and for.

Re: Good day Ladies and Gentlemen

Someone either wasn't paying attention when they wrote down that VIN, or whoever did it needed new glasses. The second character should be a "B". A "D" would make it a Deville, and your car is not a Deville. The "9" in place of the "Q" would mean it had been built in South Gate, CA, which didn't start building Cadillacs until MY 1979. Let's just hope this nonsense didn't get transferred onto the title, because getting it corrected will be a major hassle.
