When works correctly, the parking brake releases automatically when engine is running and the gear selector is in drive or reverse position. The vacuum hose could be busted or parking brake or cable is rusted, try to pull the parking brake back with hand when holding the manual release lever.

I took the vacuum line off the relay. And I'm still getting vacuum. So that's not the problem...this is frustrating...

If neither the vacuum release nor the manual release lever is working, then you have a broken linkage with the cable, or the cable itself is broken or frozen. Get yourself a factory service manual, although you may find it's mechanic time.

Sounds like frozen cable. I had it happen too.

There should be a lever underneath the dash above the parking brake pedal. This lever is like a pump that slowly relieves air in the vacuum. On my '69 coupe I had the same problem, and my lever was a bit fragile, so be careful.

It's easily visible if you pull the lower dash panel off. Hope this helps!!

Just found this thread and I have the same problem with my Coupe, did you ever figure this problem out and if so, what was it?

Re: 69 sedan deville parking brake help.c

Guys, running into same issue, can someone advise?

    ----------

OK, guys based on previous suggestions - I went under the hood and I do see a manual release lever that activates the vacuum valve. I can see that while I pull the manual release lever.

    I think the brake does dis-engaged. A bit of a relief ...

Now, it looks like while the car is running and you move the gear from P (handbrake engage) to either N/R/D etc. it does not automatically disengages. Has anyone troubleshooted this? where should I start? looks like the gear is not engaging the vacuum?

It is your nss. On column passenger compartment side by the firewall. It may have been bypassed because of leaks. Do your backup lights work?

Re: 69 sedan deville parking brake help.c

What's up everybody? I just had a similar experience when engaging my parking brake. When I stepped on it, it only moved a smidge, but when I put it in gear it would not release and the manual release did nothing to release it. So, what I did was soak all the mechanisms (related to the parking brake) under the dash with penetrating oil. I waited about two hours, then I tried to move the manual release lever, which now had a longer range of motion, but still did not release the brake. Next, I jumped on the parking brake pedal.... (I was nervous and reluctant about doing so, but...) The parking brake went down more. Then I pushed the, now more freely moving, release lever and heard a nice loud POP. After which, I started the car and put it in drive, then also reverse. The car rolled in both directions without touching the gas pedal. I believe part of my problem was, that the E brake pedal was engaged but not enough to cause enough tension for the release to activate. Plus both my release pedal and E brake pedal were kinda frozen from lack of use and some corrosion. Once I was able to get the E brake pedal engaged deeper and the manual release moving freely, everything jived. Hope that helps in your case... Peace

You need to use this ALL the time. That's what the auto-pulloff is for, to encourage the use and so you won't forget to pull it off.

The only time I don't use mine is in the garage. No room in front to get at the hood and if it develops an "issue" I don't have to get under the dash to manually release it.

Some pictures about this system, mine didn't work at the beginning, It stucks in brake position.
So for the next guys who ask what is like :

It is bolt on the firewall with 3 screws, one cable is attached to the rear breaks, and one depression to the engine.
You can't disassemble it, but I sandblasted it, then painted it after removing all the sand and greased.
Off course now it is working

Looks good. Too bad it's buried under the dash!

You stated that you can't remove the cables, but I don't see any cables in the pictures. I'm having the same problem with my 70. I want to go in and do this but I want to be clear first on the removal before attempting. Thx
