1960 Coupe Deville - Cross country NY to LA - would you and should I???

    Hi
I'm new to classic cars, and looking at buying a 1960 Coupe Deville in NY
Would like to do road trip via 66 to LA.
Its about 3600 miles - would probably do 350 miles a day
Car is in very good condition inside and out and runs like a charm - won many local shows etc.

Is this a wise decision, do you think a 50+ year old car can do it reliably?
If yes anything that needs looking over 1st and if no - why?

    Thanks

As long as the car is in good mechanical condition and you have it serviced before you set out, there's no reason why you can't drive the car cross country. Just have lots of money for gas, remember to use only 91 octane and up with a bit of Marvel Mystery Oil in the tank to counter all the ethanol and stave off vapor lock at the higher elevations as you cross the Continental Divide, then have fun! It's what the car was built for after all.

The Marvel Mystery Oil is a good tip. I found out the hard way driving back to San Diego from Las Vegas. Vapor lock is no fun! If I were to make the trip in a '60 Cad, I would bring along a few parts that could give you trouble and that are no longer carried as regular items in auto parts stores. I would bring along a waterpump, fuel pump, generator, and a voltage regulator.

Ditto on the above items. I'd have a spare set of belts too, and of course tools!

Super jealous of the car and the trip! I hope you do it!

PS- Make sure it's riding on radials. I wouldn't make the trip on bias ply

Sounds like it will be a go then
We'll be coming from New Zealand and shipping the car back from LA.

What month would be best to come to avoid snow etc up around Boston, Montreal, Toront, Chicago?

April? You may run into snow in the mountains in the north, stay south and you will be ok.

April may still have some snow flurries in the northern US and Canada, but the South and Western US should have nothing worse than Spring showers.

Re: 1960 Coupe Deville - Cross country NY to LA - would you and should I???

I drove a 1960 Cadillac from the East Coast to Los Angeles in 1964. The Interstates were still not finished then so had a lot of time on non limited access four lanes. Even without the interstates with the car in good condition I didn't have any trouble.

Let me also say that I crossed the country twice in a 1940 Packard 120 Touring Sedan back in the 1940's when there were no interstate highways like the the system that exists today. In those days it took 4 1/2 days to cross the United States from L.A. to Philadelphia and about the same for the return trip.

It's a great way to see the country, especially if you get off the Interstates and travel on the lesser roads every once in awhile. Best of luck! By the way in April keep your eyes open for storms that could breed tornado's in the mid-west and plains states.

    Would I? Yes, providing :

    A) I had enough cash and credit for unexpected repairs/transport/lodging should I break down "somewhere west of Laramie."
    B) Brought a digital camera and video 'corder and a laptop to document such a wonderful trip.
