Snow in front wheels and vibration

We got about 5 inches of snow here and after a little fun on unplowed roads, put the car away. I went out later in the day when roads were plowed and car was shaking badly above 35 mph. Car also had significant wheel vibration.

I found ice in the front rims had built up between the caliper and the wheel. Because it was only on approximately half the rim, it caused a big imbalance.

Took a trip to the spray wash to dislodge the snow/ice.

Never had this happen on other cars and found it interesting.

It's common with wide sporty wheels; rather common, especially with mud. Ever seen "My Cousin Vinny?

Re: Snow in front wheels and vibration

Years ago when I lived in Michigan I had a vibration problem that took four dealership visits to solve. Every morning I had a bad front end vibration. Took it to the dealership and after four visits here is what happened. They would take the car inside and balance the wheel,........ give me the car back. What was happening was some soap that was used to put the tire on the rim was freezing overnight in a clump inside the tire, but when they had the car inside it would thaw and spread out inside the tire and appear balanced. Took tire off rim, emptied tire, problem solved.

Had that happen with those old wire wheel hubcaps. A buildup of snow and your out of balance. Glad to see those disappear.
