What's the deal with the hole in our mufflers?

Remote started my car in a garage and it is 10 degrees here in Chicago.
There was zero breeze and the exhaust plume was very noticeable as a result.

As I approach the car I notice a plume of smoke exiting my muffler right in the middle and think, " I can't have a hole with 4700 miles on the car." I checked the other muffler and it had the same plume, right in the middle of the muffler. For those tha start their car in a windy condition you can identify the hole by moving your hand across the middle of the muffler. You will feel the heat.

So my question is, "What the hell is that about?"

CB, those holes appear on just about every muffler I've ever seen. I believe (and somebody can correct me if I'm wrong), that they are condensation drain holes.

By the way, they have left some nice puddles under my car.

Makes sense. I do not recall seeing holes on previous cars I have owned.

    Caught me off guard.

Cool Re: What's the deal with the hole in our mufflers?

Just a condensation (water) drain. After the water boils off, you won't see it. Most cars have this drain hole.[COLOR="Silver"]

Water drain holes. A byproduct of combustion is water. Nothing to be concerned about
