Newspaper article - the end of the front bench seat

Was looking at the paper the other day and saw an article for the end of the bench seat in the front of full sized / mid sized cars. This was somewhat of a review on the XTS's lack of the front bench option. It mentioned that last American made car to offer a bench is the impala (and it's a more expensive option to have too) and that with the redesign coming up for the impala it will no longer be an option.

    So What does everyone think?
Is the lack of an optional bench seat a negative to those that remember bench seats in everything?
Is it going to be missed by anyone?

My opinion is that the front bench should have died long long long ago.
Basically due to cars being so narrow mostly these days making it difficult to drive safely with someone rubbing shoulders with you sitting 3 across in the front.

This was in the Minneapolis times last week I believe.

A front bench should've been outlawed years ago. It's dangerous.

I don't care about a front bench for the center seating position, but for the lateral legroom.

If the benches are gone, so are the column shifters . . . I've even read somewhere that the steering wheel will be replaced next by something more computer-esque?

Not necessarily. Thunderbirds always came with bucket seats and a column shifter. As for the steering wheel, YouTube has a Top Gear video of the History of SAAB and they talk about SAAB producing a car with a center pistol grip controller for steering. Might work great for the video game crowd. But I'm not sure I'd like it. Since you wouldn't have as much control movement as with a steering wheel, I would think sensitivity would be too high for most folk.

I recall seeing that pistol grip control ... I'm a gamer of both the console and pc type and have used my share of controllers / joysticks. The sensitivity of a joystick and range of motion is just too tight and narrow for it to really work automotively at this point. And with no connection to any physical steering linkage I can't imagine things would go over very well when the power steering fails and you cannot control the car.

I am very happy to see the bench make its final departure.

I miss the bench seat from my Regency. The center console makes canoodling (and other feats) much more difficult.

The steering wheel isn't going any where. However, I am sure eventually the steering shaft will be replaced with steer-by-wire. The nannies will then be able to control steering angle as well throttle to alleviate loss of control.

I've heard it called a lot of things, but never canoodling!! LOL
(yes, you're right; it is much more difficult)
