Trunk lid doesnt close sometimes when putting up the top, 2006.

I have noticed when closing the top on my 2006 XLR that the top will close, the flap will go down and the trunk lid will not close. It happens 9 out of 10 times. If I get out and press the trunk button it closes fine. If I put the top back down a couple inches then close it again then the trunk will close.

Is there some sensor that needs to be cleaned that might be keeping this from working right? Clearly the motor still can open and close the trunk just fine. I have around 43k miles on my XLR if it makes a difference.

Maybe your service department could tell me where the sensor is that tells it that the top is closed so I can try to clean it? If I was wanting to take it right to the dealer to pay for service I would have

Actually these are pot sensors - i.e., no cleaning necessary. I too have experienced what you are describing. Sometimes if you release the retract button and press it again it will resume. Sometimes as I look back when this happens, I'll see the trunk lid rock and by timing the rocking with the button press it will resume.

The only sure-fire way to fix the problem is with a tech-2 and have the car relearn the sensors positions through the entire sequence from closed roof to open and back closed. If that doesn't solve the problem, then you need to have the dealership replace all 4 sensors and relearn. I say all 4 because they're cheap and the Tech-2 doesn't really tell you which one failed, just that the sequence failed.

Make sure your dealership has a trained "XLR" tech, he may be able to determine if its an alignment problem or a failed sensor.

Re: Trunk lid doesnt close sometimes when putting up the top, 2006.

Actually, there are three position sensors, (all potentiometers) the Top Position sensor (located on the driver's side, just above the seat behind the black cover on the C pillar) the Front Tonneau position sensor, located on the back of the trunk face between the seats, and the Rear Tonneau position sensor, located on the driver's side cantilever arms of the rear decklid.

There are four switches. One in the passenger side windshield header that is activated by the Folding Top locating pin, two in the windshield latch (opened and closed) under the headliner, and one in the auto cinching latch above the bumper.

Your problem can be caused by a defective Front Tonneau position sensor. It takes five minutes for your dealer to scan the Folding Top sensors and switches to find the problem. Most of the time, it's a bad sensor.

Without a set of shop manuals and a Tech 2 scanner, you have to rely on a dealership to find and fix the problem. The sensors can cost up to $125 unless you buy them yourself online.

    Good luck,

    CC
