| Re: largest ever made? I believe the heaviest luxury car back in the day, were the 60's Lincoln Continental Convertibles weighing in over 5,500lbs. The reason being is because there Unit-Body cars, so the engineers had to add even more steel to the Verts so the body stayed stiff and did not flex. That's the main difference. Your talking about an extra 400 to 500lbs of added reinforcement of steel which is crazy if you ask me!
60's Lincolns weren't that long ( they look huge though), but they are wide and extremely heavy.
I own a 61 Continental sedan which weighs a hefty 5,135lbs at 78 inches wide and a 212 inch length which wasn't that long of a car when your talking about back in the 60's. Full size Chevy's were just as long as Lincolns.
Cadillacs were way bigger than Lincs, yet weighed less, so in a sense the shorter Lincolns had a higher quality build to them and were more solid than the bigger Cad's and Imperials.
Just try opening a door on a 60's Suicide Linc, it's freakin super heavy! |
