Remove this ad
I'm new to this forum and I'm not sure if this is the proper place for this thread, but here goes- Are the '73-'76 2dr devilles the largest, (lenght, width, weight) production 2dr cars ever built? I've searched around some and think they are but I'm not sure. Thanks for the help.

Re: largest ever made?

The 1969 - 1973 Imperial 2-Dr. Hdt and the 1975 - 1979 Lincoln Continential 2-Dr. Cpe were larger, but not by much.

Re: largest ever made?

The longest 2-dr car I know is 1969 Imperial Lebaron Coupe (235.3 inches length)
The widest is 1957-1958 Imperial 2-dr (81.2 inches wide)

Re: largest ever made?

1960 Ford Galaxie was 81.5 inches wide. At that time, some states required running lights on sides of vehicles over 80 inches wide.

1958 Lincoln Continental = 229 inches. 80.1 inches wide. Weight = 4888.

Looks like LeBaron is longest if our numbers are correct.

Re: largest ever made?

Magazine specs list early-'60s Imperials at 81.7".

Longest:
1973 Imperial---------- 235.3"
1974-'76 Cadillac Fleetwood Brougham--- 233.7"
1976-'78 Lincoln Continental----- 233.0"

(Not including Cadillac Limousines which were 252.2" in '74-'76, 250" for '73, and etc. for '72 and earlier.)

Re: largest ever made?

I believe the heaviest luxury car back in the day, were the 60's Lincoln Continental Convertibles weighing in over 5,500lbs. The reason being is because there Unit-Body cars, so the engineers had to add even more steel to the Verts so the body stayed stiff and did not flex. That's the main difference. Your talking about an extra 400 to 500lbs of added reinforcement of steel which is crazy if you ask me!

60's Lincolns weren't that long ( they look huge though), but they are wide and extremely heavy.

I own a 61 Continental sedan which weighs a hefty 5,135lbs at 78 inches wide and a 212 inch length which wasn't that long of a car when your talking about back in the 60's. Full size Chevy's were just as long as Lincolns.

Cadillacs were way bigger than Lincs, yet weighed less, so in a sense the shorter Lincolns had a higher quality build to them and were more solid than the bigger Cad's and Imperials.

Just try opening a door on a 60's Suicide Linc, it's freakin super heavy!

Not necessairly, for example the previous gen Durango was heavier than an Escalade, but is total shit for build quality. A lighter car can also mean more work was put into its development to keep it light.
