Is the Ford 50/50 split because they bought so many foreign auto companies?

With the exception of the 1959 Ford 801 Powermaster tractor my grandfather bought 46 years ago, my family (on my father's side) has always been a GM family. I'm the only one who ventured out and bought Fords, and I caught hell for it at first. The other night I took the whole family out for dinner, they had a ball and couldn't stop commenting on the smooth ride and how quiet it was.

My other grandfather was likely to buy anything. He lived in Detroit, traded cars every 18-24 months, and never repeated from one manufacturer to the next. He was a machinist and sort of had business dealings with all the plants. I remember a Plymouth, a Dodge, a Ford, a Pontiac, and a little robin's-egg-blue rambler he bought for Grandma.

The Ford tractor still runs, by the way. I was told that the engine is the same 4-cylinder that was in the Model T and some of the Model A's.

Re: More Lincoln Zephyr Photos

There's still a lot of Model T's and A's here during the car shows running all over town. Simple technology can easily be fixed and never really dies. For example, the oldest clock in the world I believe is at St. Marks Square in Venice, it's almost a thousand years old, but still running! But if you need an obsolete computer chip (or quartz watch IC) for our cars to run in 20 or 30 years, good luck!!!

My family bought Jonn Deere tractors.

I noticed that about the interior dome lights on many Fords and Mercs, Lincs. The same chrome twin spotlight dome was used on many models.....

With GM I noticed the door handles on the outside were the same on many cars, ie. the GM X-Car had the same as the F-Body, Camaro, Grand Prix, etc. I'm speaking of the late '70's and early to mid- '90's here. Probably more I missed with those door handles.

Just one way to save money I suppose, instead of re-tooling for every car.
