The 70's were a long time ago. And what happened then really has no bearing on how Cadillac does right now. Also, the 3 series/C-class market is very different then the large luxury sedan market. Infiniti broke into the 3 series market alot faster and more successfully then Lexus broke into the S-class market.
The first year the Phaeton was in N.America, VW sold about 1500 units. The 2nd year they sold half that many. The car was a failure. Mercedes was selling 1000+ S-class' every month. Cadillac can't afford to spend a tonne of R/D on a car that may or may not go over well. Theyd be better off spending money on a smaller sedan, a smaller convertible, or an all electric sedan....
