    tuning knob

I've beaten this horse to death a few times in the ATS forum over time, but I thought I would bring it up again because of a recent trip...

I just took a cross-country trip in a 2013 Impala with a tuning knob. GLORIOUS. I could flip down the XM dial like nobody's business. Rapid clicking through channels, and immediate audio of the new channel. I often found myself gravitating to the temporary Billy Joel channel. :-) Not a huge fan, but he had 33 Top 40 songs. Wow!

Does anybody have experience with the knob in the 2014 Impala? (Like CUE, but with a knob added.)

Buick also has a knob. Only CUE has to use the finger paint motion to accomplish the same results as the dreaded knob.

Yes, searching for stations is a pain and requires you to watch the screen way to much. I can't for the life of me figure out how the person who designed that part thought it was an improvement. Evidently drivers must have been complaining for years about control knobs and they thought this was a better way to go. I know that Cadillac says to just use voice control but that takes forever and can be a pain also if it doesn't understand you. Fortunately, I only listen to about 8 different stations and I have them programed so I just use the steering wheel button.

I'm with you Joe. They are herding us like cattle to their way of doing things and if we don't like it we are the ones who are wrong. Like the paperclip some things just make sense the way they have always been. To the younger generation change seems to be the guide word and not convenience or simplicity. Coming from an aviation background I have always loved innovation and improvements to things that I have found tedious. When the new computer nav systems and aircraft management systems came along I was happy to learn as much as I could about them so that I could use them to the fullest. There were teething problems with them just like CUE but the interest from the aircraft electronics companies was a whole lot different than GM. They actually wanted to know how to improve their systems and how to make software changes that we pilots wanted. Of course the FAA was a pitbull in the corner that we don't have in the auto world. I suppose "Clap on clap off" to some is better than the old flip up switch on the wall by the door but at least you always knew where the switch was and that it would work.

I imagine a 70-80 year old buying this car and the salesman tunes CUE to his favorite channel and for the next 5 years it's never changed because he doesn't know how to do it.

You would be wrong my friend. It's amazing what we 70-80 year olds can do. How do you like your clap on system?
