    Re: USB drives and CUE

Well the results are in. The only way to get album art to display on the console is to embed the art within the mp3 file when using a USB drive. I had to use mp3tag to load the album art I had in each album folder and wait forever for CUE to reindex

All my album art displays, and I'm mostly using .mp4 created by Nero. Dunno if it is embedding or not --it just works.

    Re: USB drives and CUE

this might apply to one of your questions. CUE went berserk when I tried playing my .mp3 music from my ripped files written to USB/SD/CD...specifically the file structure and about 50% of the files were not recognized. retried in a new 2014 CTS Premium (because I figured CUE (the 2013 rev) could be to blame) and the major symptoms were the same!

after much screwing around and surfing, as an experiment, I changed from this original file structure:

    medium
    artist
    album 1
    album 2, etc

to this where all album folders are in the root:

    medium
    album 1, artist whatever
    album 2, artist whatever, etc.

now CUE at least sees all my files.

still aggravating: it often displays (and plays) two or three iterations of the same track. it's occurred to me that maybe I need to research how to re-index/initialize CUE. I received no info up front that CUE had any internal memory but apparently it does. tracks I've erased and then re-written on a newly-formatted SD still appear as multiple entries in some cases. WTF? my $15 .mp3 player has no difficulty with multi-layer file structures or replicating tracks from new media using stored data!

Update for anyone experiencing issues with CUE handling large music volumes.

I left my car with the dealer one day to have them investigate the extremely long indexing times and voice recognition not being unable. Keep in mind I have my mp3s on a Patriot 256GB flash drive but using about half the storage. It was taking CUE over 2 1/2 hours to index.

Engineering instructed the service center to replace the human interface module. They did so and to my surprise it fixed the problem! Now my 128GB music library is indexed within 6-7 minutes!

Very interesting. I wonder if that was software based or hardware based (i.e. newer head units with faster cpu and/or more memory) improvement. Anyway, congrats!

If you think about it, I'd be interested to see what version of the software it has installed on it. You can find that in Settings towards the bottom. 23427521 is the newest I've seen reported so far in the wild.

Here are the software numbers now showing on my 2013 XTS:

    Software: 23427521
    Gracenote: 23427515
    Map: 23141791

On March 13, 2014 (the day before the HIM replacement) they were

    Software: 23150273
    Gracenote: 22993544
    Map: 22993553

and these were the versions when I first acquired the car in September 2013.

I am starting to suspect the software updates are not getting distributed like they would have you believe, plus I've had the dealer check every time I brought the car into them to check to see if it was up to date, which they tell me every time that it is. Seems interesting to me the latest version happens to get installed when the HIM (Human Interface Module) was replaced. Anyone have any insight to this?

Yeah, I've got 23427521 on my 2013 as well, because I was squeaky wheeling about a problem I was having with Nav reboots. Now fixed, it appears (yay!).

I've seen reports that's what's being shipped on 2014's. I seriously doubt anyone with a 2013 has 23427521 without being relatively assertive and persistent about their issues. In fact, GM Infotainment pretty much told me that was the case in an email (called it "rare").

So all this who lead you to believe that GM is not pushing updates to vehicles. And the problems exist within the HIM which could be a combination of hardware and software. They are probably banking on most owners not being affected enough by the problems to complain enough.

Pretty sad no matter how you size it up. They don't communicate with the owners regarding planned updates (if there are any) and certainly don't post anywhere what version is current.

Here it is August 9 2014 and my software version numbers have not changed. This leads to two possible conclusions. Either GM is not making new releases or they are not pushing them out over the air.

I think you have to go to dealer for update install.

Each time I take my xts to the dealer they tell me GM is sending updates "over the air". I have never seen a version release schedule and no one seems to know how to get one if it exists. But the dealer always checks and tells me I have the latest version. The maps and speed limit data are so out of date they are useless.

    Re: USB drives and CUE

Dale, welcome to the frustration club. Don't despair, soon your aspirations and dreams will dissolve to mere apathy and acceptance, like the rest of us. I too had envisioned a kinder, friendlier CUE in which I could house all my media. But, on to your questions!

Q1. Is there a procedure to get CUE to forget about what it indexed before and treat the drive as a totally new drive?
A1 - Yes. Starting the car. Which is exactly why it's so frustrating, it doesn't seem to pick up where it left off, so if you have a large media device with many files, it never seems to finish indexing, which hobbles search by genre and artist.

Q2. Is there a limitation on the size of USB drive CUE can handle?
A2 - Yes. Max recommended is 32GB. Larger will yield the results described above, and forget about external drives unless they're very low power draw.

Q3. Is there a limitation of the number of folders/files it will index before it drops them on the floor?
A3 - Yes, 4k media files/drive is max recommended. More will take longer to index and will cause voice requests for a specific item to not function.

Q4. Should I give up on thinking I can carry my entire audio library in my XTS?
A4 - Yes. Unless... Search this forum for other solutions, which include iPods, tablets or phones with external drives plugged in and streaming via BT, etc. I have reconciled myself to not having everything, but you can reach some level of contentment by using 32GB drives, keeping your files to no more than 4K/device if you can, organizing them well (use MP3Tag to edit and fix the inevitable ID3Tag problems with MP3 files, to embed album art, etc.), and don't be afraid to tweak as you go. I have one card for audiobooks, one for music, etc. Also, any .m3u files must be created on the USB drives themselves; you can't create them on your MAC/PC and then copy them over, the file system references will be wrong.

I don't have long commutes, so the above works for me. For long drives, I stream from my tablet or phone via BT, and it connects to a 2TB external drive under the passenger seat.

Good luck! Take solace in the fact we've all been where you are at now.

    Don

    Re: USB drives and CUE

Bluetooth is your friend. CUE's flaw is the same as nearly any other automotive system. They seem to think you should store your music inside the car on a permanently affixed device and take control of it all. I wouldn't want Apple to manage my active suspension or variable steering effort, so why would I want Cadillac to manage my digital music experience? Carplay and whatever Android equivalent have pretty much put a spike through the heart of that vision anyway. I don't expect updates from CUE anymore, and I don't really care. My ATS is still the best car I've ever driven, handles like a champ in the mountains, and a statesman in the city. They made a great CAR, they tried to make a great iPad embedded in my dashboard, and that didn't work out so well. If they did the opposite I'd be MUCH more pissed. I'm looking at you Prius and Leaf...

Meanwhile I'll stick to my previous posts and say that the unsung hero here is the DIC.

Don, actually since the dealer replaced the Human Interface Module in my 2013 XTS with one from a 2014, the indexing problem has been eliminated. I have a 256GB Patriot flash drive plugged into it with half of that capacity filled with music, and the indexing is completed in 8 minutes. The majority of mp3s on that drive are ripped at 320K bps and they all contain imbedded artwork. There is still the limitation of using voice commands to play a song, but the voice commands can be used for artist or album. So CUE from a music library standpoint has been running like a dream. Apparently I had to bitch at them enough times they finally got GM to authorize replacing the module.

My gripes with CUE now is the age of the maps and speed limit data. There are roads around me that have been open for the past 5 years which are not showing on the CUE navigation. Plus some speed limits have changed too and it is still showing me the old limits.

Thanks for this info, submitted a service appointment to get my CUE system upgraded, we'll see what happens.

My experience btw with the media has left me so far using 32GB SD cards.

I use ItunesExport http://www.ericdaugherty.com/dev/itunesexport/ to export my itunes playlists to a single directory, flatten the files (no subfolders) then copy them to the SD card. Its really not a bad process once you've done it. It exports copies of the tracks to this directory. Choose m3u for playlist format, pick ALL Files for file type, and copy files to flatten (i think that speeds up indexing a ton).

When you want to update with new tracks just do another export and it will only export new tracks, not all of them all over again. The only issue is removing old playlists or tracks if you dont want them, just delete the folder and kick off the export again.

There's an added plus to not using apple devices of course, I can add new music by just copying it on the drive, i dont need to resync with an itunes library.

I use TONS of smart playlists; These all dynamically update as I purchase new music so exporting music to my drive is a regular occurence.
