GM Launches API Framework for App Development

    http://media.gm.com/media/us/en/gm/n.../0108-sdk.html

    ----------

One item of concern for us:

"The implementation of these apps is incorporated into new infotainment systems, debuting in select 2014 MY vehicles that will change how in-vehicle apps are offered. The systems' framework includes an app catalog that will allow vehicle owners to choose from a menu of available applications specifically designed for the in-vehicle experience."

I hope that doesn't exclude 2013 models with CUE (and similar systems) from being supporting these Apps.

Re: GM Launches API Framework for App Development

It worries me with the 2014 reference considering this is written on the official GM site.
I'll say this; we've been promised an app store, we have something like 5 pages worth of room to put apps, we still don't have the SMS reading app shown in previews, (there's more, but you get the idea)...
So, knowing all of that if GM seriously screws the owners of the 2013 ATS/XTS/SRX it will speak volumes with my future new car purchasing!

Not to be a pessimist, but the same thing happened with the OnStart app. It was available only for new models first, then at some point in the future it became available for previous year models. I would like to remain optimistic, however i am finding MANY features that were either advertised or even documented that are either non-exsistent or non-functional. I feel like i have purchased my vehicle from Microsoft!

    Sorry meant OnStar not Onstart!

If there are small or no hardware differences, one could expect the same or very similar binary to run on the 2013 models that runs on the '14s. If I were a GM marketing exec, I might want to ship the new cars with a new feature, and *then* post the update tote older cars.

Of course, if I were on the tech team I might want to do it in the opposite order. One could use the subset of passionate 2013 owners as the test audience and roll out a more thoroughly tested product with '14 cars.

My point being that one can come up with a good justification for either approach and still hold true to the language of the press release. Because the press release is silent on 2013 cars one can't really know which is the thinking of the product planners.

That said, I hope to not be left out.
