How hard is it to replace by yourself? My car keeps telling me to shift to park when the shifter is in park.

    You can adjust the linkage.
I posted a thread about it that I found on some Gm tech website in the normal STS section.

Good question. I've had a few instances of, 'shift to park' while I was in park also. Thinking of tackling that job soon.

    Re: Neutral safety switch

To adjust, you will have to get under the car, and on the linkage from the shift lever that extends into the tunnel, there is an adjustment nut on a adjustment sleeve. Loosen that nut and it should self adjust. If not do the following.

    - Hold the selector lever on the transmission against the rear stop in the PARK position to eliminate any play in the forward section of the linkage.

    - Grasp the linkage at the control lever (the shifter handles' linkage that goes under the car).

    - Push the linkage forward and make a note of the amount of travel the rod makes going into the adjustment sleeve.

    - Pull the linkage rearward and make a note of the amount of travel the rod makes coming out of the adjustment sleeve.

    - Place the rod into the adjustment sleeve half the distance of the complete amount of travel.

Someone said that my shifter assembly might be bad and that needs to be changed.

Who is saying this, and what is their basis for saying it. I would think that if your entire shifter assembly was bad (probably contact related), you'd have other issues too.

    Re: Neutral safety switch

The dealers like to do the whole shifter assembly rather than just do a proper adjustment. They can charge more as they are replacing parts and it takes longer to complete so more labor involved. I've seen it talked about many times in various threads in the normal STS side of the forum.

If it just takes a linkage adjustment that's good. I hate sitting in my car shaking the shifter back and forth waiting for the light to go off.

    Re: Neutral safety switch

Would a local shop be able to adjust the link?

    ----------

Don't want to take it to the dealer so they can rip me off.

Jack it up and look yourself. It is not hard. There is a slot on the arm that comes off the shifter and a bolt that goes to the transmission arm. It's easy.

    Re: Neutral safety switch

I posted the steps above in post #5. It's really easy. Once you loosen the adjustment nut, it should do it itself, but if not, the steps are above.

Adjusted the link still not working. It might be the neutral safety switch after all.
