This is my car outside of Geneva with the amber turn signals flashing and the fog lights on for demo purposes. These are the standard issue rear fog lights that are a requirement on all new vehicles outside of North America. I suppose we dont have fog on the highway in NA.

Actually this is an interesting photo because the road is the border between Switzerland and France - on one side is France and the other is Switzerland and its funny to listen to the NAV system welcoming me to France or Switzerland as it drives down this narrow lane. There is now no customs border between France and Switzerland since Switzerland, which is not part of the EU, signed up to the Schengen Treaty (abolishment of all borders - just like going from one US state to the other) a few years ago. Hence why you do not see any fence etc.

Sorry for my ignorance. So you turn on the rear fogs so the car behind you will see you in fog?

The problem in fog is not for you to see ahead because if you have turned on your front "fog lights" they are basically useless and especially on the highway. What you really need is very powerful fog piercing red lights in the back so that the drivers behind you can see you and not crash into you. And if everyone turns on their fog lights in fog and heavy rain then we feel relatively safe. The problem in the US (and in Europe too) is when you hit a fog bank you disappear and then that is when you get the pile up. In Europe and around the world this problem is mitigated when everyone turns on their fog lamps and also usually their amber hazards to let the drivers behind know that there is little or no visiblity.

Like I said previously, our regulators in DC must not be aware that fog exists in the US also.

Yes that looks like the European OEM version - with the amber turn signals they are really distinctive especially at night- you will be noticed on the road in the US of A

    ----------

PS I noticed that these taillamps are not coming from the US but from China - makes sense- The US supply chain does not have access to "export" parts

    Road trips in an sts-v

When I got mine from rippy Cadillac they were shipped from Detroit, Michigan, USA from GM's warehouse.
    They are made in Mexico.

So the China ones listed here are either reproduction / knock-offs or are being made in the GM Shanghai plant for the SLS or are used assemblies.

Here in the us, if you don't have rear fogs we just use the hazards. Definitely much safer to have the rear dogs though. US automotive lighting laws seem to really be behind the times.

I agree DOT lighting requirements are behind the times but it's also nice to have the bit of freedom in our lights.

    little side note:
...the "early" parts were made in Mexico, yes...but the "later" (spare) parts are (now) made in China...(IIRC)
...same with the rear fogs....the fogs on my export STS are made in USA....the later parts in China...e.g., the rear fogs Darcy ( "ddalder" ) got/ordered for his STS are made in China...

Nice so that means I've got "new, old stock" parts.
    You've always got great info.
I really need to get around to doing the rear fogs and new trunk shocks and SLS reverse LEDs.

Does anyone know where I can buy the clear CHMSL? I like the look of that and what to put it on my Rome-based STS-V. Thank you

    ----------

You are right but the problem with hazards is that they are the same intensity as regular taillights and dont pierce the fog - if you have ever seen these rear fog lights turned on when there is no fog or heavy rain and they are really annoying especially at night - such is their piercing brightness.
