    Charging System Problem

So I had the "Engine Hot - A/C Off" warming come on and the temp gage drop to zero AGAIN. This happens every now and then and when it does I remove the negative terminal on the battery and reconnect to reset the system; it works every time and did today EXCEPT this time after driving for a few minutes I got a warning the battery was not charging and was in "battery saver mode". We were 30 miles from home and by the time I pulled into my driveway the battery was totally dead and ALL systems shut down. We barely made it home. The battery is DEAD. What did I do wrong? Why after removing and replacing the negative terminal the charging system stopped working? Did I blow a fuse? Have to go get a new battery and trouble shoot. Any advice would be great. It is a 2008 STS-V
