    Drops of oil from engine

I have a 2006 sts-v that has only 68,000 miles on it and it is leaking oil, dealer is telling me the motor has to come to change lower crane seal, is this normal with this low mileage on it ?

Re: Drops of oil from engine

"Lower crane seal" ? Front and rear crankshaft seals, oil pan-to-halfcase seal, halfcase-to-block seal, oil filter adapter seals.

The engine "block" is actually 3 machined parts bolted into one rigid assembly: The cylinder block, the lower cylinder block/main bearing girdle (halfcase), and the oil pan.

    Hmmmm.......... "lower crankcase" ?

In order to reseal the block and pan joining surfaces the engine has to come out of the vehicle.

Re: Drops of oil from engine

I was very normal on the earlier engines, like pre-2000. I thought it was somewhat solved and a LOT less frequent since, but anything can happen. Is it leaking as in dripping, or just seepage as in a damp oil pan? If it is just a little seepage, it's a lot cheaper to live with it if you are footing the bill.

Re: Drops of oil from engine

Unfortunately in my experience, that fact that you made it to 68k without seeing oil is a small miracle in itself. My half case seal was dripping at 25k. The problem is you don't notice it because it drips directly onto the exhaust crossover and burns off.

Is your mechanic familiar with these engines? They may not even know there's a half case seal, which I think is a lot more common leak point than rear main seal.

Yes the engine has to come out. The engine has to come out for almost any repair on these cars. It's by design.

    we're talking about a supercharged 4.4L northstar (LC3) Right?

i bet the rear crank is the only leak

Really? I know the 4.6 almost always leaks from the half case seal.

Re: Drops of oil from engine

the issues that the 4.6L with oil leaks just were probably cut down to 10% of what they used to be since 2005 or so

i'm not sure if there was any new design in the engine besides the head bolts but morel likely is the possibility that new gaskets and/or sealant used at the factory along with quality control is the main cause of this improvement

very few of the 2005+ northstars have oil leaks compared to the previous years

Re: Drops of oil from engine

yeah they really improved in the first half of the 2000 decade over the leaks common in the 1990's ... the second half of the 2000 decade was even better improvement

what about adding some oil additive that stops or slows leaks, some say they recondition seals as well.

Re: Drops of oil from engine

I wouldnt use oil stop leak additives... They may stop the leak in the short term but long term they cause more harm than good. When I was a student of Auto Motive repair at LATTC back in 19-- whatever :-) a car came in where the owner used STP stop leak which didnt work so he put in more, and more until the leak stopped. One chilly morn he had so much stop leak it caused the motor oil to jell so thick it would pump... It stopped the leak, the motor was locked solid, but it didnt leak... We took the oil pan off and hung it up side down it took two days for the oil to pour out.

That additive sofens the seals the slowly degrades them, bad stuff stay away...

Re: Drops of oil from engine

I just read the prior post on additives. Back in the day (yes its an old man story) back in the day we used to use a quart of trans fluid from time to time with the engine oil. Trans fluid has a high detergent value higher than engine oil.... Some time it wasnt uncommon to use 100% trans fluid drive about 50 miles or so then drain it, the put n fresh engine oil and filter... worked pretty good....

Re: Drops of oil from engine

My trick is to put a qt of Marvel Mystery Oil in the car a day or two before I'm going to change the oil. The theory is that it'll clean and / or loosen whatever it can, get it into the filter and be drained / removed a couple days later.

With older cars I'd also put a qt of Lucas oil conditioner in with the new oil. So far I haven't wanted to do that to the N*s
