FREE Intake mod

Remove this ad
I decided to take my stock intake off the car and see what kind of material was inside the Y pipe.

In each cylinder (either side of the blower) was a cylinder shaped baffle. It looks like a paper towel tube with holes drilled in the sides. I twisted a little and the tubes (slide) come right out. Thus leaving a bigger chanber.

I hooked it all back up (without the insert tubes) and test drove it.

I HEAR THE BLOWER NOW Its not as loud as the D3 intake blower whine but it is there and sounds nice. Don't know if there is any real HP gain but it sounds a little meaner.

Normal acceleration you cant hear it but WOT and you get some whine..

I looked through the whole intake system and it appears to be unabstructed now and if we could only get a K&N or Green filter I would bet we souldn't need to buy a seperate intake system to see gains...

Re: FREE Intake mod

I'm not really a more whine fan. I'd have to hear it and see how much more whine it was. before attempting it.

Re: FREE Intake mod

A while back someone tested this back to back with and without and showed no change in dyno #'s. Maybe the car needs time for the computer to respond, but his #'s were unchanged.

Re: FREE Intake mod

Even if its not faster I wouldn't mind hearing a little more whine from the SC under WOT. Thanks for the suggestion!

As far as a K&N, I've had two cars where a DIY K&N wasn't that big of a deal. I haven't looked closely at my V yet to see what it would take.

In one case I just had to fabricate an adapter using a couple pieces of thick plastic, a hole-saw and a dremel, and some Epoxy to bond together the mounting plate I made for the MAF with some PVC to connect the K&N filter to.

As I said, I haven't yet look closely enough at my Caddie to figure out of I could so the same thing without it looking too much like a back-yard engineering job.

Re: FREE Intake mod

I would guess that if K&N were to come out with a filter system for our car, it would look almost identical to D3's stage 1 intake. The stage 1 intake just replaces the stock filter and filter box.

Re: FREE Intake mod

I would be happy if K&N would make a stock replacement. I sent them a mail 2 weeks back but got no response...

Feel free to send a mail and inquire... more requests might help get one made..

Re: FREE Intake mod

Called K&N and they say there are not going to make one.. too low production car.. So I called Luke at Lindsey Caddy to see if our filter cross matches with any other GM car. And NOPE the STS-V filter is ONLY made for the STS-V....

Re: FREE Intake mod

Here is my take on this mod. The tube holds hot air between the tube and the cavity it sits in. These intakes sit right beside the blower so they get pretty hot. The air exchange is at a slower rate than pure air coming in thus heating up the trapped air. Sure air moves through the middle pretty well but the ambient hot air stuck between the two slowly comes out mixing and heating up the fresh air coming in.

Second, the holes in the tube are not that big thus reducing the volume of air in the chambers. Removing the tubes increases the volume so throttle response should be a tick better.

It's got to be doing something since the blower is breathing a little better.

Just my .02 cents worth.

Re: FREE Intake mod

I have considered pulling the filter out for a trip around the block to see if the stock filter is way to restrictive. I am guessing A LOT of blower whine if I do that. BUT there is always a risk with doing something like that.

It appears to be a muffler for the supercharger incoming air.
Changing the exhaust to Corsa's... I think it sounds better, even "feels" better , but the dyno shows no noticeable improvemnet.
I actually spent money for a better sound and you've shown a way to get another sound improvement for free.
My concern with removing the baffles : Does the baffle serve a second purpose of smoothing the airflow?
The cavity itself will be larger , but the intake/filter tube has not changed in size and at the exit end the air still flows into the same coupler tube and down into the throttle body.
Will removing the baffle actually create turbulence? does this help or hinder airflow?

Re: FREE Intake mod

Its not really a baffle. I'll take a picture tomorrow. it is a very smooth plastic tube with small holes ( a glof tee wouldn't fit into them) drilled in it (not very close together either). So not much if any baffling going on.

Re: FREE Intake mod

It is clearly for nosie suppression the D3 piece is simply an open pipe.
