I personally feel the tubes were put there by GM for noise reduction on a high end car! I would not look to replace them with anything. IMHO | No doubt that its there only for noise reduction. But there's that big useless chamber underneath them that had me thinking it would be better re replace them with a solid (no holes) piece to eliminate the chamber. Then it would be almost like the D3 intake - i.e. - straight pipe all the way in.

In a nutshell:
Remove the strut tower brace.
Remove the engine cover (take off the oil and power steering caps on the right side first) and then you just pull up slightly on the left side and it pops loose. (see pic)
Loosen the hose clamp at the front of the intake, and then remove the hose. (see pic)
Loosen the hose clamps at the rear of the intake. (You can't remove the rubber hose connections at this point, that comes later)
There are 3 weird retainers on each side of the intake that are holding it in place. The first one I took out I dropped into the engine bay, and if I hadn't had a magnetic wand handy I'd have been in a world of hurt. That reminded me of a trick I use when pulling spark plugs (and you'll notice the retainers almost look like the top of a spark plug.) Once the retainer is loose, put a piece of rubber hose that fits snugly over it. You can turn the hose to remove the retainer all the rest of way, and you won't drop it. This also helps a lot when putting them back on when you are done. (See pics)
Now I used a screwdriver to pry off the rubber connections at the rear of the intake. (See pic).
Now the whole thing is loose - but there's a doo-dad connecting at thr front/right/bottom of the intake tube you have to disconnect before you can pull the hole thing loose. There's a small metal clip that you need to pull on, and then the connection will slide off the small pipe on the intake that it's attached to. (See pic)
Life the intake off, and pull out the plastic tubes (See pic)
There ya go.
Re-assemble in reverse order. Don't be like me and have it almost all back together and then remember the little doo-dad connection on the bottom (I think its some kind of crankcase ventilation). Cause the unit has to be all loose for you to get the thing back on.
Oh - and someone said the nuts on the strut tower brace should be torqued to 80ftlb's.
I'd say the whole thing can be done in less than an hour. If I had to do it again it would probably take only 30 minutes, now that I have it all figured out.
Enjoy!

One last request, can you let us know what tools are needed (sizes as well). Hate to start tearing it apart and not have a tool the right size, thats a long walk =). |

Pics coming up! | WOW! Now that's how you do a write up!!!!
I have not had my engine cover off yet! Did not realize there is an enlarged chamber in the intake pipe!!! Now I have spent alot of time around cars and I'm stumped!!! Why would GM do that?? What purpose does it serve?? Thoughts!? Anyone? |

Some of you have mentioned increase whine at 5,000 rpm but i hearing it from 3,000 and up even at little throttle. Also tried it with driver window down and it is very apparent from almost 2,000 rpm..
After really inspecting the intake once it was apart I'm even more confused about the design!! And the weight!!! I would love to know the reasons!!
If this wasn't my daily driver and high end luxury car I would of had a field day with my buddy's tog welder and some aluminum pipe. Everything would have been gone!
But I agree with Florian we must be real careful about how we mod these cars. I have already learned valuable lessons the hard way in my past!
Thanks again to LITTLEELVISDAN for posting this mod! |

Enough that I will leave it with the baffles out as I'm not a big fan of a lot of whine on this model car. I still hear my GM exhaust more in WOT It adds just a bit, but not enough to be obnoxious.

Actually in doing this I discovered that one of the hose claps that attaches to the air filter box was not tightened down. An obvious forgotten step from when the car was at the dealership and they changed the air filter. I swear it seems I now have to check the car every time it's been to the dealership for maintenance. |

Here's the sound of my car going to WOT with the intake mod and the car has the GM performance exhaust on it. See how this level of S/C sound compares with others who have done it. | | Cadillac Discussion Tools | | |
